I had air & water leaking around my front windshield, the butyl was old and not adhering to the the metal frame. Easily removed the windshield, without cracking, but can't find anything to remove the old butyl other than a razor blade. Any suggestions?

Scrap off as much as you can, and then old rags and mineral spirits?

A ball of butyl. Dap at it. The stuff on the dash will adhere to the ball of butyl in your hand as you dab at it. beerchug.gif

Heat will help soften. More hair dryer than heat gun. Like the glue on the engine firewall. A tedious chore. Fortunate you saved the windshield.

Fortunately the butyl was so old, the windshield came out without any resistance. There was little butyl left in the window frame, it was all on the glass. I used a section of foam pipe insulation to cushion one side of the glass while working on the remainder and so far, no cracks. Just that the old butyl is really stuck to the glass. Thanks for the suggestions.

Goof off may be your best option.

Missed the glass.

Use anotehr piece of butyl to grab what's on the frame. Then lots of rags and mineral spirits did the trick for me.

Well, the razor blade & mineral spirits worked the fastest and best, thanks.
Now the usual "while I'm doing this, I might as well do....." so next question: while the windshield is out, how difficult is it to replace the rubber gasket along the bottom of the windshield. I found a little surface rust and it would be much easier to clean up if the gasket was out. Of course then I will need a new 914Rubber replacement gasket.

The rubber is easy to replace with the glass out. It’s also a great time to refurb the upper dash and dash cap.

Thanks, the dash & cap are great, Craig @ Camp914 did those back in "15 when I bought the car. Now ordering the windshield rubber. Seems like I never run out of little things to fix. Happy Easter All.
