If you decide to do this again in 2020 - I will do whatever is in my power to make it there. I'd seriously fly to CA to see this. What an awesome event! smilie_pokal.gif

I'm sure I'll do this again. Mostly these days happen when a local-ish 914 World-er comes up with something I or one of the tools I have can help them accomplish.
If you have a particular date window that works for you, let me know and we can work toward getting that on calendar.

I'd be great to plan one and have all the non locals be able to attend! I'm talking to you @914forme @ValcoOscar @dan10101 @Rand @Cracker @ConeDodger @Cary and others I know I'm forgetting.

I put this on my calendar, but wasn't sure if another thing might be a conflict. Turns out I can't make it this time mad.gif ...Please save me a spot for the next one. However, I'm still attending the WCR+1...maybe see you then.

Okay, I have 3.5 months that are none touchable for me, June, July, August, and first half of September. open any other time frame, with advanced planning that would be even better.

Thanks for the mention, Chris. It's a bit far, but I'm pondering.

I'm still in. Just changing my focus from roll cage to center console. I'm not taking the car so I've taken measurements for what I'll be doing.

Leaving here about 6pm

Not bringing the welder but I have my EZ up and a table

Looking forward to tomorrow!!!!
Carl La Fong
I would like to fly up again but the weather forecast is technically referred to as "poopy". biggrin.gif

Hi World -
Back in June of last year, I hosted a workshop day at my place. A few folks have asked about doing it again so I figured I start the process of seeing who might be interested and what we might do. Here's a link to last years event and activities.

http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?sho...=326533&hl=

Essentially, it's an opportunity to:
- just get together and hang out with like-minded folk
- get help with something you may be working on, such as bending a tube, making a bracket, welding something, or my favorite: having a part plasma cut aktion035.gif
- use a tool I have that you may not
- try some fabrication you've wanted to do
- share knowledge
- have fun

Tools that will be available:
- Hydraulic bender w/ various dies.
- Hydraulic press
- Tubing notcher
- Roll bender w/various dies
- Plasma table
- 48" sheet metal brake
- bead roller
- shrinker / stretcher
- English wheel
- fixturing table
- band saw (al and steel)
- cold saw
- TIG welder
- MIG welder
- Body working hammers/dollies
- brake/fuel line forming tools (bender, 45 and 37 degree flare making)
- misc. hand and air tools

Please feel free to come even if all you want to do is hang out! Heck, worst case, you watch me struggle with something on my car!

Anyway, post here what you have that you'd like to work on or if you plan to come.
If a PM is easier for you or you want to talk details, just let me know.

Thanks and I look forward to seeing, helping, watching, learning and just hanging out with you!
Chris

I would like to try to make it there by noon to be an observer, learner, socialiser.
My car is stored away with engine in. but no electrical yet.

Well, the guys must be having fun. Cause they aren't posting pictures!

Since I couldn't be there I finished my training roll bar lots of mistakes, but still managed to make it look somewhat like a roll hoop.

Used cheap thin wall tubing, I'll have to adjust for the thicker tubing. But still learned a lot.

Let me just say that Chris is a class act all the way. This was a blast. We probably had 15 people there at least. Chris' shop is just to die for. He is true gentleman and has some mad skills. My brother and I had a blast getting to meet and talk with fellow 914 nuts. I am sorry, I did not take a single picture. I was having too much fun talking with everyone. Great group of guys turned out and perfect location too. Chris- Thanks so much for hosting this event. Great day.

Cheers,
Michael beerchug.gif

Big thanks to everyone piratenanner.gif for venturing out on such a crappy weather day.

Please post any pics you took - I was heads down most of the day working on the plasma table and didn't take a single pic. BAD host, BAD! so:

@Andyrew - Let's see those console parts!

@Krieger - you have the works coolest, Porsche inspired address sign. Pics please!

@MartyYeoman - that's a rocking rack mount you designed. Let's see it!

And to the rest of you, GREAT seeing/meeting you! I wish I could have had more time to chat with you. Let's agree to do this again soon.

Thanks again for making this another memorable event! smash.gif sawzall-smiley.gif welder.gif

You're welcome at my place anytime...

Awesome! Looks great. "Learned a lot." Sounds like you'll be doing it again? Hmmm, where have I heard that before? lol-2.gif

Sorry you weren't with us today but Andrew more than covered for you! I almost ran out of plasma, what with all the panels we made for his console. lol-2.gif
Maybe we'll get you to drive down for the next one? idea.gif

Had a great time. Thanks to Chris for hosting and sharing mad skills! Appreciate all the feedback everyone gave on my project and helping me understand a proper path forward.

I have one more thin wall pipe and 2 thick. Hoping that's enough.. smile.gif

I saw a preview of Andrew's console. Looking good!

i hope to make the next one!

Great time as always!!!

Chris and Lori are excellent hosts!!

If I had more time I would have used even more plasma up wink.gif

That plasma program is nifty! If it's open source I'd love a link so I can download and play with it biggrin.gif

Thanks again Chris for all the help! You truely are one busy and helpful guy on these workshop days!!
Andyrew
Looks like I missed a panel! I'll have to figure out a way to get it, maybe come up there again? smash.gif

It might look high but it's very comphy. I can barely touch the steering wheel with my arm on the console. I also have trim room so I can lower it.

Front panels will take some massaging but I think it'll work smile.gif
sixnotfour
well, your certainly making the interior look like every other car..big tunnel... beerchug.gif sawzall-smiley.gif welder.gif smash.gif stirthepot.gif
tygaboy
@Andyrew - Yep, you did leave a panel here. It was sitting in the mag brake.
I can pop it in the mail, just PM me your address.

Or, if you want to head back over and work on something else, that'd be great, too. Either way, just let me know.

Also, the CAD program I use is open source. It came with (and is recommended by) the plasma table manufacturer. QCAD: https://www.qcad.org/en/
But also note that all I need is a .dxf file so whatever you use to generate that works for me.

On the console, which looks great, btw, remember to plan for clearance for the upholstery, any fasteners, install/removal (if it's going to be removable), etc.
This sort of "oops" has bitten me on a couple things with my build.

Most importantly, thanks for attending! These days just wouldn't be the same without you.

My thanks to Chris and Lori for opening up their home and workshop to all of us -- including this complete stranger. Despite the rain it was a great chance to take the "new" 914 for a run and get some feedback on a few issues. An amazing shop and an impressive fund of knowledge was on display. A chance to meet some fellow local enthusiasts, hear about some local resources I didn't know about, and see a nascent project (thanks for towing your car there Mark). An impressive ongoing build Chris and I'm sorry there wasn't more time to talk to you and hear more about it. You certainly were busy helping everybody out, and I was happy to simply observe and learn. It was nice to meet everyone, and learn that our "benevolent overlord", SirAndy, lives just a stone's throw away from me. Surprised I haven't seen you or your car around but I'll keep my eyes open.... Certainly feel free to contact me if you simply need an extra hand with anything or need to borrow a tool I might have. The same goes for the rest of you. As I organize for diving in to the two project cars I'm sure I'll be asking for help and it is great to know there is a large local community. Any of you have old VWs as well? I've got more than a few of those in addition to the three 914's. OK, back to lurking on the sidelines!
Dave_Darling
Nice to meet everyone (again, in most cases). I love the shop, and love much of what is getting done there! The quality of Chris' build is impressive; believe him when he calls himself a perfectionist.

I had a much more interesting drive home than I would have preferred though. I went over to my friends' place in Petaluma (less than 5 minutes from Chris!) and visited and had dinner, then drove home around 9.

During one of the heavier bits of rain, a car passed between me and another car two lanes over, then fishtailed right in front of me and spun into the sound wall on the shoulder of the road. Messed up the car pretty badly, but the driver seemed to be OK. Lots of airbags had deployed, and the suspension and bodywork absorbed most of the energy I guess. I phoned 911 and they dispatched someone and told me to be on my way.

I said more than a couple of four-letter words while that was happening, but kept my head and avoided the mayhem. I'm not sure how coherent I was for the 911 operator, but they seemed to figure out where I was and what I was reporting.

Someone left a box of electrical goodies... Much as I'll likely need this stuff, I'm more than happy to help get it back to its owner.

Anyone know whose this is?

I told you I would bring those to you for when you started your electrical as I had extra smile.gif

Forgot to mention it to you....

My brother and I went and visited with Chris yesterday and we geeked out on car stuff and got to see his beautiful property. Good thing my wife was not with us.......I would have been a yard slave for the next several years.

Chris did me a favor and made something for my garage. The mistake I made was showing it to my wife before I mounted it on a garage wall. She immediately claimed it for our patio. I had to admit it looked absolutely perfect where she wants it to go.

Thanks Chris. The next time I come up I hope to be in my Six. Cheers, Michael beerchug.gif

Okay. That's a good idea. I'm thinking about 14 or 16 gauge steel. Then powder coat it black.
