Hello all,

I have a 1972 1.7 914, always been a European car. I would like to return the brake calipers to the original colour / finish. Mine are currentlly black at the rear and painted red at the front.

Also, I would appreciate any views on which Is the best of the 914 reference/historic books that give the most detail on originality of the car as a reference source.

They were gold CAD (Cadmium) plated originally, as were the same ones used on the VW 411/412.

PMB does excellent caliper restoration/rebuilds including new CAD plating gold or silver (they're a member vendor on here).

PS - there is no one best book, since they all seem to have some errors of facts in them.

Get several & recheck items on here & 914club, p914.com (& .net & .org) & at Jeff Bowlsby's website - http://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/

PSS - 2 of the better ones at=re Paternie's & Johnson's but the latter is really a 356 guy who misses on some areas of facts, & Paternie does too - but they're still good resources.

Both are around in older editions/cover art at reasonable prices, & not much changed in revisions - if anything.

PMB also has some very good how-to articles and videos DIY caliper restoration if that is more your style. They really stress that replating is central to reconditioning the calipers, but if the look is all you are going for, Eastwood has a paint system that does a good job of replicating the appearance. PMB even provides an example of that in one of their videos.

Thankyou Brent for the info, I have checked out PMB - looks a really good service.

Also checked that you can buy the Eastwood kit in the U.K. which you can, so in the short term will probably go that route until it’s time for a full refurb.
