I have a 16' open car hauler. 2 5/16" ball. Only a few years old. Plane Jane. I need to park in in Monterey for a few nights in an unguarded parking lot. I've been looking at what's available on Amazon. It's seems like there are quite a few 30$-$45 options with reviews showing how easily they are cut/hammered/pried and removed quickly. Then there is heavy cast iron one made by Amplock that looks to be a great choice, but flippin' A it's $265! I know that anything is defeatable by a determined theif. I am just looking for something that may be more reasonable. I don't think I want something as ridiculous large as one of those wheel lock contraptions.

check the local pawn shops. Get a 1" motocycle cable and lock and / or a wheel lock.

Try this chain:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0751PN5L...=UTF8&psc=1

And this lock:

https://www.acehardware.com/departments/har...adlocks/5202825

Both high quality items.

Lock your axle to something fixed. The chain is long enough to do this.

Jack it up and take the wheels off of one side or take the hitch off.

All locks and chains can be cut quick with a cordless cutoff tool in seconds.

Thanks guys! Interesting ideas. I never thought about removing the wheels. Maybe removal of the tongue jack or its crank arm. idea.gif

Didn't work for me. My disabled two axle trailer was left at the side of the road with two wheels removed and on jack stands. Thieves removed one of the wheels from the other side and installed on opposite side and towed the trailer away with one wheel on each side. Fully loaded enclosed trailer weighing 7000 lbs.

If I had taken all of the wheels off, it might have been too much trouble for the thieves.

Thanks Oscar. I will check those out. The handle on my jack has a bolt and is removable. I think I'll do that too!

Around these parts you take a well casing and slide it over and cut it off so it goes past the lock.

You add a bar to a flat bar stock. Make a round disk for the front, weld it to the casing. Cut a hole so the flat bar slides through. Take one of them big round locks and put it in there, you can add a plate so they can't get to it. And done....

If you really want to piss them off weld it with harden welding rod. You use it to weld the tips of back hoe teeth etc.... Once you do that it will just eat sawzalls, portabands, and grinder wheels for breakfast.

I was a repo man for a few years and let me tell you if I was sent to get your stuff I would have it, even with wheel locks, no wheels, tongue locks, no chains. None of that would stop me. Most of the time I would use my own trailer, winch, and be gone if less that 5 minutes. If I needed out of there faster, I would rent a large loader with forks, have it dropped about a block away, get in it, and drive over pick it up, and take it back to the awaiting law enforcement and get it loaded and be gone.

Not saying you're in trouble and hiding it from a repo but, saying we pretty much had to think like legal thieves.

BTW, gingers make too much noise, and too many sparks, Battery powered portaband, or hydraulic shears where my weapons of choice.

Biggest item repoed, a 55 foot off shore race boat on trailer. I used a large cat loader with forks to pick it up, and drop in on an awaiting semi. Had police escort as it was Detroit, and I had my share of run ins in that town. Learned my lesson up there when I was hooking up the battery to a semi, to look down the side to see two guys stealing the hub caps. Quick thinking I told them I was stealing the battery. Once they cleared and I made it back into the cab I hauled out of there, and called my client to let him know he was minus a set of Al hub caps.
