We were working on getting it cleaned up last night and two of the bolts pulled out of the left side of the rear bumper top so that went in the trash.
We got a bunch of parts from the PO when we bought the car including two sets of tail lights(in addition to the set on the car). The set with the best lenses must have been recovered from the engine room of the Titanic because they were FULL of rust. The lens bolts were so rusted that I could not get the lenses off the housings without cracking them in half. Luckily, the second spare set were not rusted and the lenses looked a lot better than the ones on the car so it all worked out.
When I bought the car the brake lights and turn signals worked but when I got it home, they didn't. (frustrating!!!)
After swaping out the tail lights last night, they all work again (still frustrating because now I can't trust them).
Michael, I'll be in touch about the Webers. I've run out of free time for this weekend but I need to get them squared away soon. Thanks.

I tell you what...ya'll have done a great job of getting this ole 914 cleaned up...
It looks GREAT!!!
Get with Michael on the carbs.... a good rebuild on the Webers will help immensely with those emission test numbers.
And for those worried about this young fellow driving it to school...don't....there's no back seat and you can only take one other person with you...fewer teens in the car means less trouble.
Good luck on this project!

We still have some tuning to do but we got it cleaned up so he can have it in his senior pictures. These are just some camera shots in the driveway. The real senior pictures will look much better.
How tall is this boy? The senior photo is wonderful and will be a great memory in years to come.

My thoughts on him using it to get to school were that the good brakes and good handling would help him avoid accidents, relatively low power from a carbed 1.7 will keep him from going too fast, too soon, and having just one other seat means he can't fill it up with a bunch of knuckleheads who want him to do something stupid.

I have been traveling a lot for work so this has been on the back burner. I got some time to do some checking on it today. I bought some starter fluid to check for vacuum leaks and did not find any.
I tried spraying the starter fluid into the carb opening for each cylinder and found that spraying it into cylinder #2 doesn't do anything but spraying it into any other cylinder causes the car to bog down.
So now I know that cylinder #2 is a problem. I don't know if it is the only problem but it gives me a place to start.

When I was working on it trying to get it to pass emissions, I found that one of the spark plugs had some kind of insert bonded to it to the point where I could not remove it without destroying the threads of the insert. I looked all over and finally found a replacement insert at NAPA. I put it in, put in the spark plug and thought all was well.
What I did not find but DJ at Don Jackson Enterprises did was that the old insert had broken and part of it had moved down into the spark plug hole to the point that it stuck out of the hole enough to cover the end of the spark plug.
It was covering the end of the spark plug enough that the spark was not able to ignite the fuel which was why it was failing emissions.
DJ got it to pass emissions so I am going today to get it registered and a plate. I am thinking about getting "NARP" as the plate. My son likes it but my wife thinks it's dumb.
What do you guys think? Should I go with NARP or something else.

North Scottsdale. I had not been in a long time. I didn't know it was now a membership thing where you have to pay to park in the main areas. There were no other 914's there.
If I am in town, I will try out 4till4 next month.

I fixed alignment on passenger side of engine lid. It had been making contact with the front edge of the rear trunk lid.
The engine cover and especially the rear trunk lid are/were way out of alignment.
The rear trunk hinge mounts are seriously messed up. The passenger side trunk mount bracket is most of the way broken off. the drivers side has been replaced with a big chunk of aluminum plate.
The trunk lid hinges on both sides needs to be fixed correctly before I try to fix the engine lid alignment on the drivers side.

We bought this car for my son to drive to school.
He drove it on his own for the first time at the 4till4 Cars and Coffee on Jan 4th. He's been driving it in the neighborhood and running a few short errands on his own over the last couple weeks and he's gone out on a few freeway drives with me in the passenger seat.
A few days ago, he killed it in the middle of a busy intersection with my wife in the passenger seat. That went over well.
He will be driving it to school for the first time Tuesday morning.
Mission accomplished!!

What are the pros and cons of paint VS raw?

May 21 2020, 02:50 PM
Click to view attachment I did a clean up on my motor last year. Blasted the shroud and painted it a matte aluminum. The raw aluminum raw is porous and will trap dirt. I would put a finish on it to seal it.

My fan shroud was put together with flat head screws. I've got a good friend who has an industrial and aerospace fastener company. I am going to head over there in about 30 minutes and see what cool connectors he can recommend. In another thread, Clay recommended some MB exhaust nuts. I'm going to check those out.

When I was removing the old exhaust of the replacement engine, 5 of the studs came out. the stud snapped off just under the frozen bolt on one of the studs that did not com out. That broken stud came out with a generous application of heat. The other two studs would not come out!!!! I tried penetrating oil, I tried heat(LOTS of heat). None of it worked. I tried a fancy bolt extractor and that just snapped the stud right at the head. I tried drilling and using a screw in extractor and that did not work, It actually put a crack in the head. Finally I just drilled and tapped it for a new stud.
The replacement engine is in the car but I need to finish installing thew carbs, fuel lines, cables, etc.
One big issue I am having is getting the front shift rod and the firewall bushing to play nicely together. I can not get the rod to slide through the bushing. If I push hard enough, the rod pushed the bushing out of the firewall.
What is the correct diameter for the front shift rod where it passes through the firewall? I am wondering if the PO(S) put a sleeve on the rod. Or is there a trick I am missing to get the rod to slide through the bushing without bushing the bushing out of the firewall?

It is either excess oil leaking out or I need to replace some seals.

Drove it across town to pick up some parts the the dealer.
They changed their hours and the parts department is not open on Saturdays any more.
Nothing like a cross town drive in 105 degree heat for no reason.
On the plus side, it ran like a champ with no oil leaks and just a few drops of trans oil leaking.

It has been fun but as of tomorrow morning, 9-4-green will be leaving my garage and heading off to it's new life in a new garage.
I'm not selling it, my oldest is taking it with him when he moves into his dorm for his first year of college.
It is bitter-sweet beyond description. My oldest son is going off to college. He took enough dual enrollment classes in high school to enter college as a sophomore with a 4.0 GPA. His schedule is a little heavy but he will get out with his masters in finance and a minor in theater in four years.
I can't put into words how proud I am of him. He has come so far.
He was three when he was diagnosed with autism. He was non-verbal, he had multiple sensory issues, he was completely non-social with anyone but his mom or I. Other kids might as well have been invisible, adults who tried to talk to him caused a blood curdling, "I'm being murdered with a knife", top of the lungs scream. If you think of a typical child with autism in your head, yeah, that was my son at three years old.
My wife spent his early years taking him to therapists, doctors, specialist, etc, etc. She typically spent over 40 hours a week taking him to people who could help him and it paid off. My wife and my son worked so hard and I am so proud of both of them.
My son is heading off on his next great adventure and I am so excited for him, even more than I am sad to see him go. I am happy he is not going far, his college is just a few miles down the road.
It is time for my son to go off on his own and he gets to do it in the coolest car on campus.
