More new stuff: LED light bulbs. I plan to replace all possible original bulbs. I did order the wrong bulbs for the instruments, so have to try again (and wait).

1157 equivalent in the front indicators.

1156, 1157, and 3893 equivalents in the rear lights.

Time to get going on the motor. First, I needed holes in my new Type 4 yoke. A good job for my big drill press.
bkrantz
Apr 10 2021, 07:55 PM
This is the heftiest job I have tried so far with the press--not any problem at all.

Right case half mounted. Here we go.

Looking great as usual! Is that the yoke the guy in the samba sells? Looks a lot like mine...and I did the same hole mods. If it’s the same, the flange of the yoke may be in the way of getting the #3 wrist pin in. I had to swap the yoke to the other side once #1 was done. Just a heads up
are you going stock or something bigger?

Car is looking great. Could you post the name of the company you sourced these from. Thanks.

Yes, from the vendor on Samba. Thanks for the heads up.
I plan a modest bump to 2056.

Not much 914 time today. I had some office work to do and then swapped the snow tires off my wife's car.
I did clean the left side of the case and "stuck" them together on the stand.

Apr 11 2021, 06:57 PM
I did remove the stock plug on the front left side, to make sure this gets sealed with the other new plugs.

I started an experiment with restoring interior trim vinyl. I plan to apply various amounts of different materials, starting with commercial vinyl treatments. The first to arrive was 3M Leather & Vinyl Restorer.

After a couple of applications over 24 hours--not much change in the plastic softness, just a shiny finish. I will try something else.

On the the engine case plugs. This is the stock plug for the front left.

Apr 14 2021, 07:06 PM
One of the new plugs with sealant.
bkrantz
Apr 14 2021, 07:07 PM
Two plugs installed on the front right.
bkrantz
Apr 14 2021, 07:08 PM
Confirmed that the plugs do not block the internal galleries.
bkrantz
Apr 14 2021, 07:09 PM
Three plugs on the rear.
bkrantz
Apr 14 2021, 07:10 PM
Made sure the plug on the right side is flush with the casting surface, so no interference with the flywheel.

Apr 14 2021, 07:12 PM
Time to start engine assembly. Here's the polished crank plus the components for the front end.
bkrantz
Apr 14 2021, 07:13 PM
Woodruff key installed.
bkrantz
Apr 14 2021, 07:14 PM
I broke open the new main bearing set.
bkrantz
Apr 14 2021, 07:15 PM
First squirt of assembly lube on bearing #3.
bkrantz
Apr 14 2021, 07:16 PM
With the bearing in place, time for the cam drive gear.

Apr 14 2021, 07:17 PM
Since my wife was out, I used the fancy toaster oven to heat the gears up to 170F. Please don't tell.
bkrantz
Apr 14 2021, 07:20 PM
After heating, both gears and the intervening spacer went on easily.
bkrantz
Apr 14 2021, 07:21 PM
And then the circlip--front of the crank done.
bkrantz
Apr 14 2021, 07:22 PM
I then got the rods out. Bearing clearance check coming soon.

Looking good, Bob. Takes me back to when I rebuilt my first VW motor (40-horse T1) when I was 16. One of my older brothers taught me to heat up the gears in the oven.
Unfortunately, I only got half-way around the block and the motor seized up
... then found out the arrows on the pistons have to point towards the flywheel
I recently painted some sheet metal parts for my Harley, and baked them in the oven (after a day of sitting out in the sun) ... my wife came in the house and started sniffing around the oven - and gave me 'that look'
... but the parts came out looking great

Back again--and back on engine work.
Today I started checking the rod bearings. These are 0.25mm under-sized, since the crank had a previous grind done. The crank was polished and the rods were checked and balanced at PE.

Apr 21 2021, 08:32 PM
I also got some plastigage to measure bearing clearance.

Then removed. This one looks like 0.0018 inch, within the range (0.0008 to 0.0028).

The Romex cables under your cabinets by the toaster oven. We are assuming you must have upgraded, since there is light on both sides of that fancy toaster oven..at least they are taped off. I guess it’s better than some of the stuff I see on jobs.
PS. Project is coming along very nicely

While the rod was still on the crank, I checked the side clearance, and got 0.016 inch, just within the 0.004 to 0.0016 spec.
