Then time for the cam bearings. I have a full set, plus an extra half with thrust edges.
bkrantz
May 3 2021, 07:26 PM
Cam bearings installed in the right case half.
bkrantz
May 3 2021, 07:27 PM
Cam installed.
bkrantz
May 3 2021, 07:28 PM
Gears indexed--probably the easiest step in the engine build.
bkrantz
May 3 2021, 07:29 PM
And cam bearings in the left case half. This is where the extra half cam thrust bearing goes, including the tab.
That should be everything before putting the case together for real. I will not install the distributor drive gear since I plan to run an electronic ignition with no dizzy.

Bolted and torqued.
Hi, I did exactly the same but later had to remove the washers as the bolt heads were touching the oil pump... check it before joining the 2 engine halves...

@kroelofsen , Thank you!!! You saved me hours of aggravation and expense. I owe you at least a six-pack. See below for what I found.
bkrantz
May 4 2021, 06:57 PM
I got out my new oil pump, a Shradek 26mm.
bkrantz
May 4 2021, 06:59 PM
And slid the pump into place, with the cam as I left it yesterday, with the washers on the gear bolts.
bkrantz
May 4 2021, 07:00 PM
And found contact between the bolt heads and the pump body.
bkrantz
May 4 2021, 07:02 PM
So I pulled the cam R&R'd the bolts to omit the washers. Just high-temp red Loctite to hold the bolts in place.
bkrantz
May 4 2021, 07:03 PM
Cam and pump back in place.
bkrantz
May 4 2021, 07:05 PM
Now there is daylight between the bolt heads and the pump.
bkrantz
May 4 2021, 07:05 PM
I measured .042 inch clearance.
bkrantz
May 4 2021, 07:07 PM
But then found another problem. The rotor stud is bottoming out against the cam end, and so does not sit completely inside the pump body.
bkrantz
May 5 2021, 07:55 PM
Checking the drive rotor, the shaft is not pushed all the way into to gear.
bkrantz
May 5 2021, 07:56 PM
A quick visit to the hydraulic press...
bkrantz
May 5 2021, 07:57 PM
Now the shaft is flush.
bkrantz
May 5 2021, 07:58 PM
I also checked the clearance of the oil pump case against the end of the cam. The depth to the cam end is 38.85 mm.
bkrantz
May 5 2021, 08:00 PM
The depth of insertion of the pump case is 38.84 mm--no clearance!
bkrantz
May 5 2021, 08:02 PM
The deepest part of the case is the protrusion around the drive shaft. Since I seated the shaft further into the gear, the base of the notch is now inside the protrusion.
bkrantz
May 5 2021, 08:04 PM
I filed off the end of the protrusion (easy, since the pump case is aluminum). I took off about 0.75 mm (0.03 inch).
bkrantz
May 5 2021, 08:05 PM
Now the base of the notch extends beyond the case.
bkrantz
May 5 2021, 08:08 PM
Now the pump sits tight into the engine case, with about 0.75 mm clearance with the cam end (without any gaskets).
bkrantz
May 5 2021, 08:09 PM
And the pump gears sit inside the case and do not protrude.
bkrantz
May 5 2021, 08:10 PM
To celebrate I cleaned up the case through-bolts, washers, and nuts.
bkrantz
May 6 2021, 07:13 PM
I found my left-over Dynamat, and decided to use some scraps on the bulkhead under the dash, since the relocated fuel pump is on the other side of this sheet metal.
bkrantz
May 6 2021, 07:14 PM
After about 20 minutes. It might not matter much, but I would rather not hear the pump.

I then got on to installing the main gauge panel.
I finally got the LED bulbs for the indicator and back lights.
bkrantz
May 6 2021, 07:21 PM
First I replaced all the bulbs in the common back-light string.
bkrantz
May 6 2021, 07:25 PM
Here's my references for wire locations: photos I took in October 2019 (never enough) and the color schematics.
bkrantz
May 6 2021, 07:26 PM
Ready to start!
bkrantz
May 6 2021, 07:28 PM
And then, done. I was able to find places for all the wires, and wires for all the places.
bkrantz
May 6 2021, 07:30 PM
And then I installed the gauge panel.
I have a couple more things to check, and then I plan to connect a battery and see if some things work.

Make sure you don't put an LED in the "GEN" socket. The alternator needs a load to charge. I think you are already aware of that.

Hi, Mike. I should have mentioned that--one of the few things I remembered to do (or not to do) the first time.

Love following your build. It has been full of the small details that plague these builds along with your solutions to the problems. Thanks for sharing.

+1, tons of details most of which are never addressed (myself included) Great job and thank you for documenting. Is there an end date for the build?

Thanks, guys. I was aiming for September, since we have our big annual car show on Labor Day (except last year). But now I have some other things showing up on my calendar. And even if I had nothing else, it would be a challenge. Since winter can start here in October, I think I should pace this into next spring.

I got some 50 mm hose, that almost matches the 60 mm stuff from 914 Rubber. It is also a bit stiffer.
bkrantz
May 7 2021, 07:20 PM
This is to connect the mixer boxes with the feed fitting for the side dash vents.
bkrantz
May 7 2021, 07:21 PM
I did the left side, and with a bit of twisting, the hose conforms to the right shape.

Thats okay, I start each day looking forward to what you have done and the progress you have made, when you are finished I won't have my morning build to watch. It has been a fun journey.

I got the right side vent hose installed. This one has to curve around the windshield washer reservoir and mount.
bkrantz
May 8 2021, 08:06 PM
With the reservoir installed, a tight but workable fit.
bkrantz
May 8 2021, 08:07 PM
I got out the side vents to finish up the system.
bkrantz
May 8 2021, 08:08 PM
They do not fit tightly into the dash front, and can fall out.
bkrantz
May 8 2021, 08:09 PM
The problem is the retaining tabs. Most are not sticking out to engage the lip of the dash opening. Here, the front tab is correct, but the rear tab is recessed.
