Progress on my custom ash tray interior light holder. For this first attempt, I epoxied the two pieces together.
bkrantz
I then went back to my custom LED fog light conversion, and how to complete the wiring.
bkrantz
I fed the stock leads into the housing, as was original.
930cabman
Bob, do you sleep?
bkrantz
But there is not enough room in the cavity at the base of the housing for both the original leads and the new wiring.
bkrantz
So I reverted to feeding the new leads out of the housing, with some additional cable housing.
bkrantz
I need to find the right waterproof connector.

At least once a week. biggrin.gif
bkrantz
I think I finished my new ash tray light, but it took a couple of tries.

Both pieces expoxied together. Not as cool as welding, but maybe next time.
bkrantz
After adding a groove for the retaining tab, the light fits--sort of.
bkrantz
First problem: not enough clearance for the electrical tabs and connectors.
bkrantz
Second problem: when I tried to bend the steel tabs, they broke off. So I soldered on some new tabs.
bkrantz
Third problem: even with flag connectors, there was not enough clearance on the end inside.
bkrantz
Fourth problem: when I tried to bend the soldered tabs, one broke off.

Final(?) solution: I replaced the tabs with short leads.
bkrantz
Connections made up, joining the extension wires with the original leads that used to go up to the center of the back panel.
bkrantz
And...it works. I need to check how the light functions in the dark, and I plan to replace the stock bulb with LED.

Clock follow-up: when I connected the battery today, at first the clock did not run. Later it started ticking. So, I have a part-time clock?

The Keinzel Clocks run for about 2 minutes, then as the spring unwinds it causes contact with the rewind circuit. This rewinds the mainspring for another 2 minutes of run time. I guess this was done to save battery life during times of unuse, but still keeping the clock's time correct. When they work correctly these clocks seem to last a long time.

Thanks. I will check it again.

Test in the dark, with the original incandescent bulb.
bkrantz
I took the light out one more time to adjust the fit, and decided to see what it would look like polished. First some 600 grit.
bkrantz
Then 800 grit.
bkrantz
Then black polish compound.
bkrantz
Then white polishing compound.
bkrantz
Finally, sealant.
bkrantz
Here's the results. Comments?
bkrantz
A first test fit of the custom rear bulkhead cover, sourced from rennspd on eBay. Looks pretty good.
bkrantz
But first, time to install the interior vinyl pieces.
bkrantz
Test fitting the left side tunnel cover.
bkrantz
Then masking off for adhesive spray.
bkrantz
I used more of this, same as I used on the targa vinyl.
bkrantz
Tunnel side cover pieces in place.
bkrantz
And then the cross member cover pieces.

I will probably not use the other vinyl pieces that go behind and next to the seat belt retractors, since the custom perlon panel covers those areas.

I love the polished look and I think the dash light idea was fantastic. It gives function to the ashtray area which would otherwise go unused. Great job

Super cool idea!
Only concern is any reflection you may pick up from that polished surface. You can always paint or powder coat it, should that become an issue.

Thanks, guys. I will see how it works out. The only remaining question is whether to put anything on it, like a "914" emblem.

Yet another update on the ash tray light. I got the LED bulb today.
bkrantz
Much whiter and brighter.
bkrantz
I also got the replacement headlight pivot, same as the one I broke when it shifted and the motor drive made the lid bind up.
bkrantz
Got the pivot installed.
bkrantz
Yay, both headlights now go up.
bkrantz
And down.
bkrantz
I also started fitting the perlon bulkhead cover.
bkrantz
To mount the seat belt reels I needed some holes, and got out my trusty punch kit.
bkrantz
Two different size holes, for the reel pin and the bolt.
bkrantz
Both reels belted in place. The fit looks pretty good, maybe a bit high. And it will take some stretching to get it properly mounted.
bkrantz
Today, I mounted the custom cover, starting with masking off and spraying adhesive. Note: it took a second coat to get good stick.
bkrantz
Also two coats on the back of the perlon.
bkrantz
Here's the cover, glued on.
bkrantz
The perlon covers the inside of the B-pillar, including the vent to the door jamb. I think the material is breathable enough so I will not cut an opening and then look for a grill.
bkrantz
Seat belt reel in place.
