1970-1976 Porsche 914
The Porsche 914 got little respect until recently.

Because of its association with Volkswagen, the Porsche 914 was, for many years, derided as something less than a genuine Porsche. In the late 1960s, the idea was for the two companies to work together on what was to be an entry-level Porsche that would also be sold as a VW sports car. The VW version never made it to market but the Porsche 914 was made available with an 85-horsepower VW-built four-cylinder engine. The car was light, fun and cost less than $4,000 new. The 6-cylinder version, called the 914/6, had much more power but was also much more expensive at nearly $6,000. That version did not sell well and was discontinued in 1971.
Today, with classic Porsche 911 prices becoming prohibitive for many, the 914 is getting a second look from collectors. It may also help that a new generation of potential buyers doesn't look down its at nose at VW engineering — see the Corrado above. Besides, now that Porsche is part of the Volkswagen Group, the mingling of DNA seems retrospectively natural.

Did you sell too low?

IMO those quoted prices only apply to very nice, very original models with no accident history and excellent service records. Or to limited edition or superbly restored models. Average or project cars won't bring $30k

The thing about the -6 having 'much more power' is also a stretch - common wisdom is that it was actually the LACK of significantly more power at a much higher price is what killed-off the -6.

1. I turned down the 914-6 as a graduation gift as it was too much above the 914-4 and why did I need the extra HP in NYC? This was in 1970.

So I got the 914-4... $2995 + Appearance Group $200... Is my memory faulty???

That price point sounds about right to me although I wasn't quite in the market myself back then To contrast the sticker on a 70 911E I used to have was like $10.5 ish and IIRC the 914-6 was >$7K which 'threatened' the 911T model having the same engine and similar pricing, in particular.

In the original article, you can clearly see that those prices come straight from Hagerty.

Price in late 1970 was base just under 4K, or around 3900. Appearance group added some as did 5.5" wheels.
My 9/70 build 1971 914 had a sticker of around $4300. Since I still have the car I do have the original bill of sale somewhere in my records...
From this point on I don't think good 914's will ever go down in value.

My ‘75 came with the window sticker, IIRC the base price was in the high 6k, with options final MSRP was around $7500...

And I'm 75 but have the original documents from Dad's purchase of my 73 when new.

1974 basic 914 2.0L with a few dealer extras, price as I drove it off the lot new-purchase in 1974. You could buy the 1970 model (in 1970) closer to $4,500 out the door.

My 1972 appearance group car was $4474.00 (not including tax and license) when I bought it new on May 27, 1972.

According to my handy dandy inflation calculator, $4474 in 1972 dollars would be $27,529.87 in today's money. While I don't think I could come close that if I tried to sell it, it would probably take close to that to replace it. For a nicer car, a (replacement) value of $32K+ as quoted in the article might not be out of the question.
