1972 1.7 to be auctioned momentarily. Interested to see sale price.
KELTY360
Sold at $14,000 for what looked to be a pretty average car.
IronHillRestorations
I tuned in just in time to see that. Sold cheap IMHO, but without being able to see more details it's hard to say.

It's funny how the big-bumper/steel-wheel cars are coming back for me. I think this yellow car looks great in that photo.

This said as the owner of a chrome-bumper, five-lug guy.

The 914 is really having its day.

I know those of us that currently own 914s would like to believe prices are going sky high, but I wouldn't be taking the hype to the bank. I think the sales price of this BJ car is realistic for today's market.

Here are the 914s sold on BaT...

BaT 914s

If you take out the 6s and a few special 4s, the rest sold for $10-20.

I'd have to see ACTUAL sales higher to believe all the hype.

Agreed. There are a few outliers, like the nicely presented white "GT" six conversion (with a very, very mild engine) that sold on BaT for $57k, but by and large 914s are still very attainable. Which makes me happy.

What makes me a lot less happy is seeing the auction houses successfully use the media and entities that are supposed to serve the hobby to drive up auction prices—which some (wrongly) then use as a marker of the market. While that helps owners, a higher price of entry discourages newcomers (who are the future of the hobby) and hurts businesses that supply parts and services in the short and long run.

Fortunately, as you point out, a few markers aren't the reality—and there are still affordable ways into the hobby.

I agree it is hard to tell at auction if the car is shinny. Bondo and paint can cover a lot of damage. buyer beware.

Saw that car yesterday- POS. Horrible paint job- 5 minute prep with fender welts painted over, etc. Fresh undercoating hiding probably a LOT of issues...

Agreed, with 911 prices falling it's hard to believe any one would opt for a 914-4 over a 911 for $20k

People like to think that just because a car sells at auction that this makes their car more valuable, sorry but it doesn't. The exception is not the norm.

What sort of 911 can you get for $20K?

IMHO the BJ 914's appear to be modest drivers or worse. The 914 that will go through at the RM / Sotheby's auction on Friday (lot 236) is one that maybe far more representative of what a restored car is worth. It looks like this a very nice car.
brcacti
Just curious, how much does the auction get in fees once a car is sold?
