For checking power to tiny indicator light socket on fan/defrost panel, one not working do I use this setting on my multimeter?

Yup. Will handle up to 20 volts DC (20 VDC). You're only expecting 12-14 volts.
Most digital mulit meters are overload protected so even if you tried to check 12VDC on the 2 VDC setting you'll probably just get a display of OL. Check you're owners manual 1st before intentionally overloading it though!
If you want to test continuity of a circuit, you'll need to swith to OHMs and make sure the circuit is not powered.
