Full Version: 914 in-car spares kit

I used to carry a lot more spares with me before I pulled my car apart for paint, and then converted it to a 911 engine. I wasn't much concerned about originality or "concours" correctness...just didn't want to get stranded. I'd like to get back after that.

Back then it was:

15x5.5 Gasburner with 165R15 tire (lighter full-size spare)
944 scissor jack (lighter, and my jack points were suspect)
Tool kit (not the original...)
Fuses + relays + bulbs
Fan belt
Clutch clevis pin
Clutch cable (under rear trunk carpet)
Throttle cable (under rear trunk carpet)

If you were going to do it now, or are doing it, what would be/is in your kit?

EDIT: Going to make a running tally for (my) "ideal kit" based on the above and other ideas on this thread:

Front trunk
Full-size spare on light alloy wheel
Aluminum scissor jack (in lieu of stock steel jack)
Tool kit (original or roll your own), breaker bar w/19mm soft socket
Fuses, relays, bulbs, clutch clevis, fan belt, fuel filter, select ignition parts
Extra motor oil

Rear trunk
Clutch cable (laid flat under trunk carpet)
Throttle cable (laid flat under trunk carpet)

This thread has a number of other good ideas—as well as some fun ones—but the list above focuses on items that could be tough to get in a pinch but won't add much weight or take up a lot of space. Past the spare tire, jack, and tools, very little weight at all. I am sure everyone's take on "smart" things to bring along differs, particularly for a longer trip, but keep the ideas coming. They might help someone new to 914s out…as well as those of us who aren't. smile.gif Especially the tequila...

Kinda depends on how far you are going.
rhodyguy
1/2" drive Breaker bar and a 19mm socket wrapped in a towel in the front trunk. For long trips? 1/2" drive 19mm hex head.

For a really long drive,, my truck and trailer.

Fill the glove box with these and you will be fine. biggrin.gif
When I had an X/19, they said to pack the title and return airfare.

We also pack one or two quarts of oil, (just in case) and have a billet jack that's pretty light and compact.

^ Pretty slick....

Suspect that might fit behind a seat? I like the aluminum 944 jack I've got next to the spare tire right now, but wonder if this is lighter or more compact, or lifts as high? Hm.

So far, tequila and Benjamins are in the lead... idea.gif

One review said that it didn’t raise his Porsche high enough to remove a tire. Had to carry a wood block for it. Fail.

I am happy to add the weight and give up the space to carry a set of reflective safety triangles. busted_cop.gif

Plus: Full size spare. 911 jack. Tools. Fuses.

Throttle cable, clutch cable, cable ties, 19mm socket and breaker, and a small adjustable wrench. Oh, and my iPhone... And one of these:

Boxster 986 spare wheel/tyre (lightweight and same diameter overall as the 195/65x15s I have on the car) and matching alumin(i)um jack.

Our car sits fairly low, so the billet jack works for us. We looped it under the factory bracket in the front trunk and trimmed a leather belt to secure it.

We used the Porsche medicine bag to carry the tools, etc. It also matches our seats.

In addition to the stuff listed already; a test light is great to verify there is power to the coil or fuel pump as well as under dash fuse panel. Small, easy to use,

My frunk is filled with radiator, so I carry the 986 spare in the trunk...

IPB Image

The roof panel still fits and clips into the stock holders. The threaded hole for the hold down and the grommet in the trunk carpet were already there. The 986 spare in either location is the hot setup (especially if you run 195/65/15s).

My method is...shake down your car if it is a recent build and fix anything that pops up. Get some miles on it (500 or so) and carry some tools during that process. After that, carry as many tools as you carry with your daily drivers...for me it's zero...after all, how many tools were carried by 914 owners when these cars were DD's?

You know, in all the years I've had my 914, I've looked at that threaded hole there and never thought about or realized it was ready to go for that use. Very cool.

Porsche must have realized the 914 was underpowered and that eventually they would be receiving water cooled V8 transplants and that the spare would have to be relocated to make room for the radiator. stirthepot.gif

In Canada it's CAA. wink.gif
Totally worth it, with all our old cars guaranteed at least one tow per year. We have the "plus" longer tow distance card. The wife has been a member for about 30 years.
