Here’s Pike Place Market two weeks ago. Normally the tables are filled with flowers and artsy stuff for sale. This morning a truck broke down on 405 durning rush hour and there were so few cars on the highway that it didn’t matter.

Maybe not in name . . . but in practice . . . same effect. What's the term we use in polite company? Ah, yes. Please continue to shelter in place.

Don't take this the wrong way as we are under the same martial law in Michigan. sad.gif

AZ of all places still not under the same order. I say good for them but it's at least a little odd given the number of supposedly old and "at risk" individuals that live in the state.

@SirAndy I'm just playing with words but. . . . what do you want to call it when your constitutional right to freedom of movment have been suspended and when the Government has forced business to involuntarily shut down thereby depriving it's citizens of the ability to work?

Can you really tell your hyper milarized "civilian" police with thier body armor and MRAPs from the military?

Let me offer the following link . . . seems the Military Times has a slightlly different take on the defintion.

https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-mil...to-martial-law/

"What is ‘martial law’

In simple terms, martial law is the replacement of civil rule with temporary military authority in a time of crisis. While its imposition is rare, the United States does have several noteworthy instances where martial law came into play, including in times of war, natural disasters and civic disputes.

Though there is no precise definition of martial law, the precedent in the United States holds that under it, “certain civil liberties may be suspended, such as the right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures, freedom of association, and freedom of movement. And the writ of habeas corpus [the right to a trial before imprisonment] may be suspended," according to a legal journal."

Freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures - Yup that is gone.

Freedom of association. Yup that is gone. Can't have a assemblies of 50 or more people - especially in bars or restauraunts.

Freedom of movement. Hanging on by a thread. I'm not aware of anyone being prosecuted for going place to place yet as long as its "essential". Essential is very hard to prove. It is essential that I go to the store to get pet food.

writ of habeas corpus - agree - not yet suspended.

I'm fully with you that the actual US military is not out patroling the streets. Let's all hope it doesn't come to that. flag.gif

None of that is true though.

Nobody is going to arrest you on your trip to the store to restock your toilet paper stash. There's no military in the streets to enforce a curfew. You won't end up in a court-martial because you walked your dog. There was no military coup, nobody ripped your constitution to shreds.

Your hyperbole is tiring and more importantly, dangerous. You are diluting the meaning of a real martial law by comparing your inconveniences with real oppression.

I will reply with this..... The United States Constitution is not a suicide pact. The government is doing what is necessary to keep us all from dying.

It’s actually quite simple the shelter in place was Ordered because to Many people are not smart enough to do it on their own even after it was in place. Frankly I think it should have been the entire country to stop the spread right away. I really hate to say it but if you look at how quickly China has stopped the virus once they realized how fast it spread that would be More seriously like martial law.

I’m writing this on a flight from NZ to Australia. NZ has adopted strict rules for people to keep apart and for non essential services to close. Plane nearly empty. Airport nearly empty.

if people don’t do this more people will die - give up a bit of personal freedom for goodness sake so others (mothers, fathers) can live.

For goodness sake!!

Stay well fellow humans - we can beat this! But only if we are all really sensible and not selfish. Be kind.

No one's freedoms are more important than the health and welfare of the many!
An interesting book I read on one of my many trips back from Viet Nam in 68-71.
George R. Stewart, Earth Abides. About a young guy who goes into the mountains on a trip. During his stay, he gets bit by a rattlesnake and almost dies. When he finally recovers enough to come down off the mountain, he is finding empty towns. Then towns with dead still lying where they fell. Book tells of the slow decline of services and how he and a few others he finds alive cope with a world so vastly different. The thought was that his getting snake-bit somehow made him immune to the virus that destroyed almost all of mankind.
Tom

Correct. USA has about 1/4 of China's population. And USA has 87k, TODAY! the curve is pretty damn steep, active cases. Exceeding China's. Simple math. People got with the program. Or else.

Do you consider yourself enslaved?

In the Old Testament, in the story of Joseph and the famine in Egypt, the Egyptians sell themselves into slavery to Pharaoh. As slaves, they have to give 1/5th of their income to Pharaoh. So if giving 1/5th of your income makes you a slave, what are most people in the US and other "developed" countries?

Hey guys I live in the area where COVID first was found in the Netherlands. I think we're about two weeks ahead on the US. But to be honest we're still going up in the curve, we only managed to flatten it marginally right now. Hoping to get it down in the coming weeks.

Our health services are coping but just. And to be honest I think our healthcare system is a bit better then in the US. (No flame intended) Here health insurance in obligated so everybody has insurance. And even with that our streets are abandoned and people are keeping the 1,5 meter (6 feet) apart.

I hope and pray for the US that you're able to flatten the curve quickly but please be careful and watch out for each other!

So there are multiple definitions or ways to identify slavery. I get that and I wasn't tying to stir up a religious discussion. I was just pointing out that based on one historical definition a lot of people in the US would qualify as slaves to the US government.

I was just pointing out that your type of reasoning is flawed.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affirming_the_consequent

Lets say your first statement was true "Slaves had to give 1/5th of their income to Pharaoh" you infer that the reverse must then be true as well "Therefore anyone who pays 1/5th in taxes must be a slave".

That sort of logic rarely, if ever, works out to be correct ...

Makes no difference anymore. There's plenty of other countries reporting numbers that don't have the same "communication problems" as China does.

The real problem with the currently available numbers is the lack of testing which makes it hard to establish realistic infection numbers. Counting the dead on the other hand is easy.

I got sick a few nights ago.... My doc suspects it was the "Virus"...... woke up in the middle of the night, short of breath. This sh#@ is real, and I wouldn't wish this on a 911 owner.

Stay safe, fellow members. I am in sales, so probably picked it up somewhere along my work day - and I use hand sanitizer EVERY TIME that I get to my car after meetings.

Stay home..... Love your family and your health. It is bad.... really bad. I am super healthy for a 50 year old, and I cannot see an older person going through what I went through the first 48 hours.

ps - I am feeling better, and don't need a thing. Please don't ask. I am home and feeling so much better.... it now feel like the worst cold I have ever had...... but trust me, that's an improvement.

Cheers, everyone! Think as a group and we will all get past this and back to ,,,, uh,,,, work.
