Hi folks!

I hope everybody is doing well in these crazy times!

I have a’75 teener that I’m in the progress of bumper
back dating.

All of the thread that I read are pointing out that you
will have to trim/cut off the front “hook” lip that holds
the original bumper rubber in place.

Well, when I rest my aftermarket FG bumper on top
of the hook lip, it’s almost flush with the left and right
plane of the fender.

Which leads me to my question, do I really have to cut
off the hook lip from the body?

Do I have a “special” FG bumper (it’s black, new and
no visual markings - bought it from a Cali member but
forgot from whom).

Did anybody else had a close fit FG bumper? Did you
just trim the FG bumper instead of the actual front?

Thanks for sharing your experience and stay healthy!

If I remember correctly, given you have a FG bumper, it's better to leave the 75-76' lip on as it provides a little extra support for the FG bumper. If you installed a steel bumper with rubber pad, you'd have to remove it.

I'm planning on backdating with fiberglass bumpers too so knowing I don't have to remove the lip is welcome news. Do I need to remove the brackets on the fenders or do they not interfere with the fiberglass bumper?
Steve
You will see the side fender lips with the FG bumpers, but I left them on mine. Years later when I mounted chrome bumpers, I had to cut all the lips off. If you click on my blog, you will see some pictures of my car with the FG bumpers

The 914-6 I just bought is a 75' and the BUB's will stay on. I like the look and know I'm in the minority.

Apparently more stable on the highway. I don't mind the look but I want to remove the weight.

Thanks for the info guys.

Depends on the color, but I like the BUB's also. I sold my car with the bub's on. When I bought it back four years later, the BUB's were gone and it had fiberglass GT bumpers. I couldn't find descent used BUB's, so i cut off the lips and put on chrome bumpers.

it is possible that since the fiberglass bumper is hollow on the back that it will fit over the lip and that is a good thing, no reason to cut it off
the factory bumper top seal is solid and would hit it

See 1st response 100% correct , I have done it to 3 BUB 914s...no upper cut.

Thanks a bunch for everybody’s input and saving me a
bunch of unnecessary cutting - very much appreciated!

I just had to trim off a 1/4” at the bumper’s top by the
left and right corners.

Fits like a glove!

PS: do you mount the fog lights to the bumper or
directly to the body behind it?

I used rivnuts and mounted the fog lights in the stock early position on the body.

Idk about the front bumper, it’s black and no markings.

The rear is made by A.I.R. in Burbanks, CA. Outside finish
is good but they miss drilled the mounting brackets, which
made it a pita to install it.
