So...

I did something stupid today climbing into the 914. I leaned on the center box thing with my elbow and put a nice rip in the vinyl covering the padded top of the box.

Does anybody have any suggestions how to reupholster/repair/replace the box top?

I didn't see anything on 914rubber and AA just had complete new boxes for $200.

Standard solution = Duct Tape If you're high class, use black duck tape.

Beware. That is a warning sign that 50 year old vinyl has become brittle. The rest of your vinyl on the seats for example probably isn't far behind. Common problem with things like vintage motorcyle seats too!

We are working on making covers for them in plaid/tartan, houndstooth, and leather. It will be a couple weeks before they are ready.

Please post photos and/or put up a group buy when you're ready. Will go nicely with the 914 Rubber Corinthian leather sunvisors they did for me that turned out beautifully when we did that group buy on visors a while back!

AA does sell just the cover for about $40 but I just installed one and am not happy with it. The quality is fine but the fabric does not match the original. It is too flat. It isn't just me being picking. My wife commented about it when she first saw it. It's the fifth item down here in case you are curious:

Is it from an appearance group car with the "real" box or the "tray" and of center cushion?

Is it ok to redo all leather instead of vinyl? I've not searched but seems most replacement upholstery are cloth or vinyl to keep factory correct. It sure would last alot longer if the car has been rebuilt.

It's your car. You can do whatever you want. I intend to migrate mine to all leather eventually but I'm not starting with a nice orginal car either.

There have been some really nice cars on this forum done in leather. Keeps me inspired.

Sorry for being a smart alec about the duct tape. Honestly -- my car came with standard silver duct tape on the back pad so that's what made me post the comment!

Just want to check so I won’t get flamed for deviating. Most restored 928 get full leather wrap ( dash, door panel, roof) the whole interior except carpet area. Yes, at a cross road between keeping my S4 as driver or restore.

Leather is normally what I would prefer, but I do drive with my top off a lot in Oregon, It will get wet. That's why I went vinyl.
