Full Version: Rear Trailing Arm Questions for a Newbie

I have something rolling around inside my other Rear Arm that I haven't painted yet.
My questions are:
How do you pull the rubber pads out?
Looks like washers holding them in place but mine aren't loose?
Are the threaded rod or rods removable?
Whatever is bouncing around in there sounds solid, as a nut might sound.
I know it would drive me crazy to do all of this work and have that sound going down the road!

It is probably welding slag inside the big boxed section. No access to that. They are bushings that hold in the pivot shafts. If they are tight leave them alone. They look like early arms which do not have a drain hole in the lower end. I would not worry about what is inside the arm.

Thank you gents!
From the diagrams I get what the rubber is doing now, thank you
What I thought was a washer is actually a part of the rod
What holds the Rod in place besides the rubber bushings?
In other words, if I pull the bushings does the rod just fall out?
I'm guessing that tube is solid and the slag can't escape from that direction
I am tempted to drill a hole big enough to get the Slag out and then weld it back up.
Thoughts?

With apologies to Bruce I think a drain hole can be seen in the picture.
Hold the arm over your head and shake it while watching the hole.
Maybe it can fit through the hole. Make the hole larger ?
It may be annoying but it is not a real problem
914 Rubber sells bushings and a tool to install them.

The only way to remove those bushings is to destroy them (usually by burning them out. They are bonded to the trailing arm and axle rod. If your bushings are in good shape, I wouldn't mess with them. Even if you burn them out, I'm not sure you'll be able to get to whatever is rattling around inside. IIRC, the tube the bushings fit in is solid all the way through to the other side.
