Everything is comming together nicely for the Red Rock Classic.
Thanks to all for your efforts. Keep up the good work.
I turst Jeroen will have the registration page done soon to go public.
One of the details yet to be resolved are the awards classes. Joe (914RS) volunteered to make the trophys. Since we will probably have a small turn out (in relation to the WCC), I don't know if standard classes are appropriate for the awards - best 4, best 6, best conversion, etc.
I would like to see as many different people as possible win something. What do you think of the idea of being creative and having some fun with the awards classes?
For example:
#4 Memorial - the lowest VIN for any year. (#036 from '76 would beat #099 from '71)
Long Distance - the person who drove the longest way to the event.
Best of Show - gotta have something for the nicest car.
Trunk Monkey - most unusual item in trunk / glove box / console.
Frank Sinatra - "I did it my way" - most unconventional repair or modification
Rip It Up - most rips and tares in seats and cracks in dash.
Light It Up - for special interior / exterior lights or lenses.
Crank It Up - for the loudest exhaust or loudest stereo.
Turn It Over - for the odometer showing the highest numbers.
Best NARP - a class for those who come without a 914.
Be Prepared - for the person who has the most spare parts and tools.

you tricked me on starting a new thread.
I just noticed this..

i think it would be a good idea to let people know it is ok to come without a 914. so i like the idea of inviting people to bring pictures of their 914's and vote on a "best jackstand picture"

The 'bring a picture of your car contest' sounds like a good idea.
I have seen it tried several times before.
Only once do I remember anybody actually bringing a photo.
I do like the idea of one of the awards being given to someone without a 914.
There must be some way we can have a contest for the other vehicles.

I got an e-mail from Joe (914RS). He says he can not log on to this forum. He forgot what the password is. I did too (but the cookie remembers for me).
Can someone please send him a PM with the password to this RRC forum.
We need his help. He is our trophy guy.

OK, I'm here. Sorry about that guys.
I like John's ideas for nontraditional classes. I'm having a 'Best RS' award made, but I'll just hang that one in the garage before I leave the house.
I agree that we should keep it to eight classes or less. Think how bad it would be if nine cars showed up and only one person went home empty handed.
I like:
Best in show
Longest drive
Frank Sinatra
Best non-NARP
Golden Wheelbarrow (Scott Thatcher award for driving a POS)
Pimpmobile (most bling)
and Best RS (taken
)
I'll take suggestions for style of trophies (plaque, regular, etc).

i think the longest drive award should be a plaque that we add names to every year, and the current recipient gets to keep it for the year they won.

please bring the best RS award along...
I think it would be hilarious...
regarding styl of trophy.
I kind of like the non traditional ideas...
what about an engraved tool, a custom vinyl decal, a flashlight, an emergency 914 breakdown kit, or something useful.
and I'm fine with traditional too... and certainly not trying to make more work out of it.
Depending upon the cost, we need to factor the trophy fee's into the entry fee. So far Joe, we think that the 3 meals will be near 55 bucks and thought the entry fee would be best kept low at around 60. Is that enough for trophys? worst case senario like you said would be 8 people, and not much money for trophys
but Joe, I'm totally ok with doing what ever you decide.
I say if your willing to go through with all of the hassle, trouble, and personal time to tackle this project... then pick a trophy style you like and we will do it !

I always liked awards that are made from car parts. Gears, pistons, rods, etc.
Maybe you could weld something up from some spare parts you have laying around.
Paint 'em, mount 'em, add an engraved plaque . . . whatever.

OK, this would save money. We need to pick the appropriate parts for each award and then get donations, because I've sold all my /4 parts and Liz won't want me submitting any of her new parts.
Plaques for the parts would be relatively cheap and easy.
Suggestions on parts please.

I have some junk around...
I think I have some old transmission gears/sliders/etc
I know I have some titanium valve retainers with lightening holes drilled in them
trying to remember what else....
could use bolts and junk welded together to form something weird....
going from Joe's list... what would the ultimate part be for each of those types of awards?

We could buy affordable wrenches in a common size...
like a 10mm
or a 13mm
or a 12point CV tool
and then have them engraved with something like
"Red Rocks Classic 2005 Car Show Award"
that might not be as cheap as junk, but probably if we bought chinese tools it would still be 10$ or less.

Pimpmobile (most bling)- A VW logo off a bus on a gold chain and Best RS (taken )- A new plasma cutter |

It seems like we have a consensus on the categories.
Here are my suggestions for possible awards.
Best in show - Porsche Crest on a nice plaque
Longest drive - a gear, piston some other car part.
Frank Sinatra - A Martini Glass.
Best non-NARP - A license plate frame that says "MY OTHER CAR IS A PORSCHE".
Golden Wheelbarrow - golf / tennis balls painted gold on a plaque.
Pimpmobile (most bling) - something Chrome
Best RS - any piece of
will do.
Someone mentioned a traveling trophy for the longest drive. That might present a logistical problem getting it back each year if the winner does not attend the next RRC.

So Joe, John, everyone....
before we go public with the 60$ registration fee...
Do we need to add anything more to help with trophys?
Series9
Jul 13 2005, 10:55 AM
I've got the Scirocco wheel and brake rotor (914 front) covered.
Engraved plaques for each part will likely run $10 each.
brant
Jul 13 2005, 11:01 AM
so roughtly you need 80 bucks
hey team do we need to add 5$ to the registration fee?
pros: we don't run short, we have a tiny padding for the unexpected, and we might have more left over for donating to charity...
cons: will make it a TINY bit harder for people who are really struggling with the financial decision around attendance.
weigh in please
I'm thinking its a good idea

Here's the final decision on the awards:
Best in show- A real plaque, in aluminum, welded my me and hand polished, with a Porsche hood crest
Longest drive- Liz's original steering wheel (cheaply recovered)
Frank Sinatra- A four-bolt rear rotor with five studs (as in five-bolt conversion) welded on it in a questionable manner (Liz's idea)
Best non-NARP- The Scirocco wheel
Golden Wheelbarrow (Scott Thatcher award for driving a POS)- Cut a medium-sized, recognizable rusty piece from a parts chassis.
Pimpmobile (most bling)- A VW logo off a bus on a gold chain
and Best RS (taken)- A new plasma cutter
I think we're going to need the raise the registration fee because I purchased the RS award today and it was significantly more than $10.
All the awards will have engraved plates attached, made by a local trophy shop.
I still need the Golden wheelbarrow piece and the VW bus logo.
Here's the RS award. I'll have a sticker made to describe it as a RRC bonus.

Best RS award goes to... ME Bite me you PorVolks homos! (especially Joey)
Seriously... I have an idea that I've been tossing around in my head (yes there's plenty of room up there).
I'd like to offer a couple of "Humanitarian" type awards to be given out annually to club members that have made a difference. The idea came from bad calipers that I have laying around. I would have them plated and mounted (silver and gold). There would be two give per year.
Golden Caliber/Caliper Award - Karl
Silver Caliber/Caliper Award - ??? you guys decide
I simple need plaques to bolt some freshly plated caliper 1/2's to. I would like to offer the first golden caliper award to Karl for his work the Peter's family.
You get the picture.
Thoughts? Any idea where I could get the plaques (that is if you think it's a good idea)?

Aug 16 2005, 10:12 PM
Eric,
I'm fine with the caliper Idea.
regarding awards cost in general..
joe, eric, do you want me to pay pal $ from registration to each of you, or do you want cash when we meet in person.
I intend to bring a full accounting... well nothing fancy really... just a list of all registrants and the total of that money with me. Then I will give the meal money to ben in cash, and the rest will be for the charity... minus the awards cost of course.

Honestly, we didn't drill it for a plaque because I'm hoping the recipient needs a driver's side headlight cover. Hopefully it can be stripped and put back into service because it's actually in very good condition.

I'm transposing your other question about who, or how to pick.
I don't want to deal with setting up voting at this point.
I'm not trying to dictate anything.... I just don't want to have to find a box or ballots.
I think we are all adults and could probably handle the voting... If any one of us wanted to participate and withdraw from voting that would be ok too...
just an idea
or we could pick 3 attendee's who don't have 914's entered to be the voters?
