Just finished learning how to disassemble and assemble the Rear Axle Bearings.
Took me a day to find the trick to the puzzle.
But one of these bearings is just slightly different from the other 3
It has 16mm ballbearings with it's proper race
The other three have 17.5mm ballbearings with the corresponding races
As seen in the picture
I found it strange, is this common?

Guessing the smaller one is the money saving version. Years back I started comparing the quality of the rear bearings with different results. In the time period that the originals were made there was only one standard. Now the bearings come in good, better and best.

According to Blind Chicken Racing CV 101 the 16mm ball size is used in stock VW Beetle 94mm CV's( same size as 914's). 17.5 balls were used in 100mm Type 4 CV's. VW Bus and 924,944 use 20mm balls. The more angle of the axle the larger the balls.

Thanks Mark!
That's some great information
So the 16mm was inserted post factory then
Those ballbearings are pretty worn as well
