I want to get an Optima for my '73 2.0 but I have no idea which model number or type. Any advice?

Thanks!
StarBear
For a 74 1.8L, last year I put in an Optima 34R. Adjustment clamp was perfect though the bottom lip needed to be trimmed just a bit to fit in the battery tray. Very happy with it.

Optima is ok . but too expensive in the long run short run

Lead acid sealed is what i use . but just dont park the car for 10 years

Bought the R as per the below thread. However, I had to turn it the opposite way to accommodate the rain tray. So if you’re going to run a rain tray just get the regular one.

I bought one of these AGM batteries from Summit Racing.... ....XS Power D4700.
It bolts right into the stock 914 battery tray.
Has plenty of cranking and Amp-hr for a reliable daily driver battery.

And made it look like this in my car with some creative decals and a battery "topper."

These "two" batteries are one and the same battery. I put some Bosch decals on the XS Power battery.
"Both" way the same at 42 lbs...typical weight for a full size battery.

I am very happy with my Odyssey AGM battery. Went with it after hearing Optima’s quality had gone down. Smaller footprint meant finding a way to secure it in place, but they also sell mounting kits if you’re not a diy person.

After replacing my battery tray I’d never go with an old school battery again.

I got the Optima 35 red top from Advance Auto Parts. Regular price $199, but they have every day a 20% off coupon which brings the price to $160. Fits perfectly in my 1972 1.7L, did not need any adjustment or turning around. I've only had it for 3 months, but so far perfectly happy with it.

I haven't run an Optima, but have had great luck with the Odyssey in both my -4 and -6 cars. I've been using the 625 model and they have plenty of cranking power.

If you dont mind the extra investment. All my 914s are running Odysseys with Renline mount kits ever since the Optimas went to complete crap after moving manufacturing to mexico. I run both the 680s and the 925s without issue. I have yet to have had one go bad. Added bonus its a 20--25lb weight savings.

Back in the day I had Optimas that ran 10+ years, but after the last couple i bought that didn't even make it past the 2 year mark I gave up on them completely. Costco (at least out here) even stopped carrying them, when i asked their shop guys why I was told that they were getting massive amounts of them returned.
