I don't know the special word for this targa pad piece

Yes just a trim piece ,took mine off recently,bugger of a job finding the screw heads,some were a little chewed out but got there in the end.
In this case when refitting the pillar trims need to be removed first and same with the latches.
Mine had been covered in thin leather due to cracks,I plan to fill the cracks with JB weld black silicone and recover with thin non-reinforced black VW headliner material my trimmer sells.

I have the OE ones. HERE BTW if case you are interested in originality there are two different versions: early is pot metal, late is plastic.
