It seems to be a recent practice In this forum to refer to a community member in a thread by referring to them by “@member’s handle” in bold script.

Did I miss something?

What purpose does this serve?

When and why was this introduced?

I can’t find any reference to this practice in the FAQ section of this forum.

I would appreciate some education on this.

It tags them and they get a notification they were mentioned in a post.

See, you should have a notification.

And if a username has spaces or odd characters in it, you still use the @ symbol, but when you're typing in their username, surround it in quotes.

@"Like So"

Still can't figure out how to do this. Have tried copy and paste of user name but it loses the bold and underline. Tried control B and control U but that didn't work.

Just type someone's username in your post and prepend it with a @ sign.
No need to copy or paste anything.

When you submit your post the site will turn what you typed into a link and send a notification to that user.
