So I have established that the item at the back is a poor condition glove box

It appears to be the plastic top for a console for a car with an AC unit. I think specifically a DPD unit and there is usually a plastic gauge panel as well.

Believe it or not, that glove box can be restored to like new condition easier than you might think if you like to do that sort of thing.
