Should be a air filter on top but with porsches or vws

Its worse . as in who put all that shit on top
Of my beautiful engine ?

Carb guy talking here

But f.i is technically superior as a carb cannot sniff the exausht 100x a second and adjust mixture 100x a second for all conditions .

So who cares about looks
abes914
And add a 100 lbs barbell.
And yes, fi is more superior when running.

Yup, that picture is absolutely correct!
But, 21st Century FI is so vastly superior to carbs. I will likely never go back to carbs again in a Porsche.
Frankvw
hahaha, yes ! I came from a pre-67 VW hobby...never injectionparts on any car. Then 'did' a VW T2b 2.0 type4 injected motor...first injection in my hobbycars. It was a big puzzle. Looked in my mind like your picture ! wow...hard to master, but worked out ! Then I figured...next step a Porsche.....staying close to the VWs the 914 was a 'logical' choice since the earlier Porsches were (financilally) out of reach. And of course I bought a D-jet...agian it was all new, but I learned a lot, but that picture still represents the feeling for it...at least the first months. Now I am used t it a bit and no...your picture does not represent my FI anymore smile.gif

Original picuture is true IMHO. Original 914 FI was sort of a maze of wires and vacuum hoses. Modern FI not nearly as ugly.

Can't beat the clean look of carbs but the simple fact is that FI has proven itself to be the winner both for emissions and performance.

Persoanlly I prefere ITB FI -- best of both worlds. Looks like a nice clean set of carbs. Has the wonderful induction sound of carbs. Performs like modern FI. Mabye someday I'll spring for the DubShop kit.

Yep, pretty close to what it really looks like.....

Hoses and wires going every which way.

Generally I HATE carburation but have to deal with it on 356s and early 911s and 914-6 models, and do successfully, when factory equipped and the carbs are clean and not too badly worn, they work well. The worst thing is trying to start a carbed car after sitting awhile. The lean back fire always scares me

@mlindner ....first I thought you had this (beautiful) engine on the 3rd floor of your house, so you could look at it all day. I now realize the houses 'in the window' are actually miniatures smile.gif hahaha

More carb and twin plug porn. biggrin.gif

I agree with the OP picture, I was that way then I learned to fix FI and started playing with SDS. For the /6 I got a smoking deal on the carbs and the twin plug dizzy, it's a bit thirsty but runs smooth as silk. I thought I'd switch to FI one day, but right now I don't really have a reason to switch.
BTW I'm driving my 914 the sound is orgasmic. w00t.gif

All I can say is that carbs have never left me stranded. My DME injection has left me stranded or has been flakey on and off. When it works, it's much better than carbs. Better gas mileage, more smoother, starts right up, adjusts for altitude, etc.
Carbs pro's are better sound, more reliable (less components to fail) and looks cooler!! ITB's are the future for fuel injection, but still too costly.
Mark Henry
There is a big difference between a /4 and /6 on carbs, the /4 is a lot more finicky to small changes and the linkage has to be bang on. The six can be out a bit and still run sort of OK.

Carbs suck. And i find my FI intake more visually pleasing.

Plus, i can drive from the beach up into the Sierra's and turn the car off, go for a walk, come back and have it start right up on the first turn of the key. No problem.

And for d-jet + L-jet

Air filters are no longer available ?

So guys strap on. A. K&n
Doesn't improve the look sad.gif

Once saw a guy here who used
Complete fuel injection from 80's Rabbit
That was the cleanest setup i ever saw f.i wise
Root_Werks
Come to appreciate mechanical injection systems over the years.

Working with this engine for my 914. The sound, throttle response, and aesthetics of carbs, with the modern accuracy of fuel injection. ITBs

Of course, Singer did it better...

I do like my 3.2, but the 3.6 does sound better and is more refined in lots of ways!!

Cant really blame FI for all those hoses though. Technically all but 2 of those hoses could be removed and D-jet wouldn't care one bit... the government might, but d-jet wouldn't.

The pic of all that wiring needs to be darker. like deep in shadows where a flashlight barely works.

In my 914 ownership history, I have had 4cylinders with D-Jet, L-Jet, Dual Webers, Dual Dellorttos, and sixes with Dual Webers, MFI, and Motronic. The only thing I have not personally owned is a six with CIS, but I have worked on them.

For the 4 cylinder cars, L-Jet wins. Better drive-ability, smoother, and no sync issues.

For the 6 cylinder cars, Motronic is the best system. Just turn the key and it idles, cold or hot. But for pure engine love.. MFI. Nothing sounds like 6 velocity stacks when the engine comes on to the cams. And the throttle response is phenomenal. But to get that, you sacrifice cold starting, cold running, a very steep learning curve, and fuel mileage.

The invention of the computer chip made for a quantum change in the internal combustion engine. Even the most basic EFI system is far better in performance, fuel mileage and emissions than the absolute best carburetors. My 4.0L six with Motronic gets better fuel mileage than the 2.0L factory six with Webers. And the Motronic doesn't leave me with a gas smell in the garage after driving it. The only reason I don't switch the factory six to Microsquirt is it is a factory six.

Remember, this is YOUR car. Use what makes you happy. If you love carbs, go for it. If you can get a Mr.Fusion and a flux capacitor in your 914....well... I want to see it.

These look pretty cool. I dont know if I have ever seen anyone run this type of setup on a type 4. Seems you would get the velocity and sound of the weber style carb, with the engine management, and smooth idle and dare I say, "Gas Mileage" that a computer control has to offer.

Yes, they are more money, but time is money. Tuning is money... I emailed Borla to see if they had a spec sheet or a dyno sheet. This is a beautifully built setup IMHO.

And I agree, it is YOUR car. Build it the way YOU like it.

@Robarabian

Those throttle bodies are sort of similar to the same generic throttle bodies that DubShop uses. Perhaps Borla has only CNC'd in thier logo. Check out the Dub Shop that offers a whole system if Type 4 ITB's are of interst. drooley.gif
