A friend of mine owns a '75 911 Targa. When he got some engine problems last week he decided to give his money to the right guy - a well known Austrian specialist for Porsche technique (engine, tranny, brakes, ...). Only problem - this guy has his shop about 300 miles away
So he asked me if I would accompany him with a second car - sure I did

He gave me his daily driver (the BMW) and took the Porsche. We started early morning and had to use nice little (and twisty) roads ...

... as well as german Autobahn ...

... and Austrian Autobahn (photo via inside mirror ) ...

here are both cars at a travellers' inn

even a Lamborghini had to bear the traffic jam

when we arrived after more than 6 hrs, the first car I saw was this 914-6 race car

it's a real six from 1971 and owned by a friend of mine
he decided to put a stronger engine in it - a carbed 2.7 with about 210 HP

I knew this car when it was a standard six
now it has got steel flares, FG hoods, FG bumpers, a roll cage, and, and, and ...

there was a second teener at this place
seemed to be nice, but not very exciting
looked like a standard '75

but Toni - the Porsche specialist - told me a cool story about it

the owner of this car has a physical handicap and he isn't allowed to drive cars with manual transmission - so he ordered a sportomatic conversion

Toni took a sportomatic tranny from a 911 and built some adaptors and with some modifications he managed this conversion - so this is a '75 914 2.0 Sportomatic

Toni is well known at some Porsche racers, so he has always a couple of Porsche race cars at his shop

this was a 17 hrs trip accross Austria, but it was absolutely cool
Toni is a real nice guy and a real Porsche specialist
unfortunately the's about 6 hrs away - otherwise I'd visit him more often

Toni tried to explain it to me - but I'm not that kind of mechanic to keep the details in my brain
but I remember that this oil pump was a major problem
he also told me about a second pump he needed for the right underpressure for the clutch trigger (or so)
another problem was the adaptor from the engine to the tranny, which was designed for a -6 engine

Actually, I had this discussion just yesterday with the owner of the local Porsche parts place. A few years ago, he saw a 71 1.7L 914 that had a FACTORY sportomatic. It was owned by Vasily Polak for years. Sat right next to the 917 longtail that bears the number 917 (from the FIA lineup photo). It's the only known factory 4 with a sporto.


The parts were designed and built, and are even listed on the PET CD.

It used a VW automatic Stickshift flex plate on the back of the motor, and a 2 stage oil pump on the front to feed the tranny. He didn't have pix of the assembly, but he did have picts of the complete car.

for those who are interested in tech details of the conversion:
I'm sure Toni would share his knowledge and expirences
I've got his eMail - just PM me when interested
I'm not sure how well his english knowledge is, though

due to the fact that my tech knowledge isn't really good I'd say it's not a good idea that discuss the topic with Toni and translate the result
in this case it would be better if Andy would mail Toni IMHO

with the mention of a "second pump" my guess is they implemented a vacuum pump as is used for power-brake Diesels. if i *had* to do a Sporto /4, i think i'd try to find a way to mount a Sporto pump (also 930 turbo scavenge pump) where an AC compressor isn't...

but yoiu have to *really* love a 914 to put that much time an effort into something that can be had in a 911 or Boxster for less...

I don't know - I didn't talk to the owner/driver of the car yet, but I'll do within the next couple of days

That car is a piece of junk, look at that sail panel vinyl on the drivers side...what a disgrace, they should send it over to me where I'd keep it in a garage, haha. Awesome looking cars!
