Full Version: What to do before installing used axles?

I have two rollers that will end hopefully – be getting engines in the relatively near term and that means I need to get axles installed.

I’ve picked up a number of used and believed to be good axles but I’ve never run them and I’m curious what you all would do prior to installing them.

One car has an axle installed that wasn’t properly covered so it looks dusty/dirty on the end that connects to the transaxle and that obviously Hass to be cleaned – just pull it and use a parts washer on it and then re-grease?

If one or more of these look passed it is there someone that rebuilds these or am I about to learn a new skill?

Thanks!

I wouldn’t install unknown axles without first disassembling, cleaning, inspecting for wear grooves, and re-greasing. It’s not a terribly hard job to do but it will be messy.
