So a ‘72 was my introduction to 914s and I loved it until the rust worms battled me, and I lost. Took ‘er off the road, picked up a rolling chassis, blah, blah, blah, failed project. So I went on the search and found a nice ‘75 in ivory white, within the state. Ivory wasn’t my first choice, but it had good bones and the price was right. Did a little research and tracked down the first owners (I’m now the 3rd) and they were Uber excited to meet.

So we meet and the history unfurls. These original owners were a president of the WMRPCA an editor of the Uber Alles newsletter for a number of years, had tracked and shown the car, and used it to teach drivers education. Wanting more giddy-up, they put the original 1.8 into their VW bus and installed a crate ‘73 2.0 at about 17K miles (it now has 67k). It has front and aft anti-sways, lightened flywheel, scheel seats, ATS wheels and a few other goodies.

I’ve had it about three months, and it’s so much more fun than the tired 1.7 in that ‘72.

I'm not normally a fan of the late bumpers but the black and white contrast on your car looks really good.

Thanks for the positivity. I’ve a pair of glass early style bumpers I’ve been thinking about installing, but from the side, the lates look quite good. I’d say the black/white contrast has grown on me.

Congratulations. Yes the ATS wheels look good. The BUB's may look OK with the black/white contrast, but believe us, like Coondog (Greg) says, if you backdate with some nice chrome steel bumpers and good bumper tops, you will love the look. Not to mention probably shed 90 pounds total. I am not a fan of the fiberglass bumpers for street driven cars. I just think they are easily damaged as well as not providing any "bumper" protection.

Anyone have a good product to remove primer from a set of chromed bumpers. I’ve an old pair that were primed by the PO.
I hear you about glass for street use, I already own them, and I like the weight savings. Won’t be a project until next season.

The big bumpers look good on some cars

I don't get the BUB hate. I think these cars are beautiful in all styles of original bumpers. Viva la BUBs

I agree. Not only do these have their own character, they also provide some protection. Ask someone who accidentally put his truck in reverse and hit the accelerator...... Chrome bumpers wouldn't have survived that, but no damage to the bumper or the car, just the ego. To each their own, but I'm keeping my big beautiful bumpers.

Now, to get back on track... LOVE your car. Great that you found out some cool history. I love the picture under the sculpture, truly two works of art. My advice is to keep it for a year or so before you decide to make any significant changes to its appearance.
