Looking for the correct front oil cooler, preferable Setrab, to mount in front. The Patrick Motorsports one is 21.5 x 4.25, so I am guessing that is the maximum size I can go. Looking for a cheaper or direct alternative rather than spend $450 on the PMS one.

Hey - I extracted one from a Mercedes 300D in the local pick n pull. It sits vertically in the Mercedes, but fits nicely (horizontally) in the GT style front mount shroud area. The fittings are each end and metric, and you'll have to fab up your own mounts, but otherwise its a functional, high "value for money" option. Made by Behr as well, keeping that Germanic flavor to your freshly cooled oil.

FYI,

Mazda RX-7 Oil cooler?

Tony, what are the dimensions of this Mercedes 300D oil cooler. Any particular years.
RFoulds
Youre on to something with the Behr 300D cooler. Dimensions check out and used on EBay under $100, even new aluminum version only $250. Much better. Thanks

What I found was Behr part #1261800065. 4” tall by 17.5” wide cooling area. Tanks look to be about 1.5 inch so overall width 20.5” approx.

I used the huge RSR sized cooler from CFR coolers but the Rx7 was the staple for years and years

Mazda RX-7 Oil cooler?

You have to cut the shroud to make the RX7 cooler work, but it is doable

I have this in my race car installed by the PO, it’s working very well this season. Got a hot one coming up this weekend in Fontana.

agree.gif excellent choice ,when buying used get it cleaned ,you can soak it in a bath or get a ultrasonic clean which is best, amazing the shit that comes out after years of use.
Diesel cars coolers tend to get really dirty which reduces oil cooling, petrol cars to a much lesser extent.

Used coolers cost $75-150 + ship to get it clean and you are still risking your engine if something gets loose and travels through the oil path.

I had one on my 6 cylinder track car. You need to do a bit of work to get the cooler to flow. Larger AN fittings, grind out a narrow inlet.

I have a couple of them with the swivel fittings.
They are a perfect fit and a quality Ferman made Behr cooler.

There are at least three different heights used on diesel Mercedes. Ranging in height from 2.75 to 5 inches in height.

I got a couple of MBZ ones from Bruce Stone. I chose the smaller one (6 pass) of the two so it fits under the shelf, as you can see in the mock up below. Not sure yet if I will be using the fittings it came with, or AN that would be welded on the end tanks.

This one will be use on a 4 cylinder car.

@Montreal914 - looks like a smaller version of the one I have. Attached shot shows part number as well:

@davep - the dimensions are (roughly) 20" wide and 4" high. It fits in nicely in a GT shroud without having to make cuts.

Good coolers...I might go the W123/126 route too (if I end up with a front cooler). I had one of the W123 coolers on my M110 euro FI engine I was going to put in my old W114 coupe. It would be a nice item to honor the car I miss.

I wonder if the smaller W123 model would work on a 2.7/6 as-is or if it would need fans for traffic duty in the DC area.

Thanks Tony. It is even available new on Pelican Parts:

Yes, I did see as low as $288. What are the fitting sizes?
Glenn, do you or would you use one of these?

I think i saw them listed as /10 on some of the MB boards, what say you Tony?

If they are not a metric size nipple they will be Cohline fittings.

Edit: 84 300D are M22x1.5
Mark Henry
Cohline, in this pic from the bird MB forum shows a cohline fitting.
The bottom line is a standard hose fitting silver soldered on.

you will save a lot of time and heartache buying Jim Patricks designed and tested setup. Years ago before Jim took it upon himself to make a great kit, we used an rx7 mazda cooler and then fabricated aeroquip lines, used a 911 oil cooler thermostat and the gt shroud and 916 engine grille chicken wire. Even took for some high line applications, a factory chrome bumper, cut it to gt specs and had it rechromed to match the lower gt valance

OzCoolingParts Pro Heavy Duty Performance Aluminum Transmission Cooler - approx 20"x 4.5". $200 - probably a good option.

I just went through sourcing this last month, and posted the following on this site, hope this helps! Link Here - Oil Cooler Thread

Additionally, should you settle on the PMS unit, hope my photos and references on my build thread help. I see you're in La Quinta, let me know if you need any assistance. bye1.gif

Dammit Bruce, I should have thought to call you. I found the Behr Mercedes one at FCPEuro for $190. If I didnt already have a shroud on hand, the PMS kit would have worked out better. I tried to save cash using my existing Setrab cooler, and a shroud already on hand. in hindsight, I could have used the existing cooler without a shroud anyway.

Fluidyne, double pass
