But can someone help me understand where this is exactly? It's not ringing a bell. I know it's a return spring and part of the parking brake cable assembly, but is it engine bay side of firewall or cabin side? Or is it only for late cars?

@BeatNavy I have pasted a pic below. It is the mechanism after the handbrake lever.
It is inside the cabin, at the firewall (you see the handbrakecables going through) but it is covered by a small tin lid with two screws (removed to make this pic)

Well, apparently mine is missing. And my parking brake has been sticking a lot the last couple of years. Coincidence?

On closer inspection it seems I am also missing this piece (circled in red) so I don't have anything the spring would attach to. I believe it's part 28 in the PET picture.
