Also Rich Bontempi at HPH - High Performance House in Redwood City.

He's old school & been working on 914s since the 1970's, has a humongous parts stash on-site in his 4 story warehouse, & his team knows 914s well.

South Bay, but worth the drive for the service expertise, or just to see & buy needed parts.

If I lived up there - that's where I'd go, & I've sourced parts from him, & will do so again I'm sure.

Jeff Bowlsby probably knows other shops too (& if Marty is still working?), & can advise you on which shop is best for you in S'Rosa. PM him on here.

Cheers! beerchug.gif

Wes,

Yes, but I thought that he still owns HPH & comes in some, but his crew have done much of the 914 etc. work for years. If so, then he's still available for his guys to ask on anything an old hand would know.

Is Marty Yeaman still around & working at his shop in Palo Alto? He's another good one in the Bay Area familiar with 914s on the body & paint side.

I'm not positive that he's still involved - so someone up there should check & update 914world -n but that's just what I'd heard from someone else up there.

It would take Rich or whomever years to sell off his stock - it was jam packed.

I have seen them selling stuff on evil-bay lately.

I just wish it wasn't so far away, for me to source parts there, but I may whenever the COVID is under control, & I get my Westy van back to use for parts hauling! biggrin.gif

My brother-in-law lives in San Jose, so we'd visit them too.

7T914-6
Just talked to Rich Bontempi last week and picked up some NOS heater boxes for my 6. Very helpful but VERY BUSY. Doesn’t sound the least retired to me.

Have been using Bill Eason (Eason Auto Werks in Oakland. Also old school focused on air cooled Porsches for over 25 years. Great guy.

Used to go to Hi Tech in San Rafael but it’s been a very long time. I know people that go to him and seem happy.

Rich has some great stories from the old days, & loves to talk about racing his 914-2.0 & proving others in SCCA etc. wrong! biggrin.gif

FWIW - Rich's favorite street upgrade for the 2L /4 is simply to use the Euro/ROW 2.0 Heads with the 8.0 CR that clocked in at 100 HP, plus some good tuning to add some HP & TQ to that.

Apparently they'll still run great on Unleaded - especially in later years when we added mid & high-grade (premium) unleaded to the fueling options.

Rich thought that was as effective or more so, than the small up-bore options used out there (2056, 2100+/-).

BTW - The USA 2L heads are 7.6 CR for 95 HP, & can also be better tuned by a good 914 Mechanic for more than the listed 95 HP, as my guy Hans does, & he was factory trained on 914s, 356s & 911/912s while at Circle Porsche in Long Beach, before starting his own shop in 1972.

I think that Porsche has always been conservative on their listed ratings on all cars (& now SUV/CUV), as well as having performance tweaks that their Techs could do on their cars, including 914s.

I'd been told by Hans & other old schoolers that the tweaks & Euro heads can get the 73-74 2.0 /4 to the detuned 914-6's listed 110 HP (detuned from the `69 911-T's 120 HP 2L -6 for marketing reasons) - but then the 914-6 2L can likewise be "juiced up". shades.gif

If you know the tricks, then you can improve any of that era's Porsches, as you can by re-chipping the modern ones.

Do we have an up-to-date 914 Shops nailed thread here in the Garage Forum?

If not, we should start one & start listing these here & others in other areas as a resource for members "on the road" & at home.

The number of Air-cooled Porsche experts dwindles every year, so having an updated topic is a necessity. I think that we're down to just a couple here in Orange County now, & about that in LA - at least those also doing flat-fours (unfortunately my guy Hans now only takes older existing customers air-cooled VW/P cars for the past 10-15 years).

I know of a couple of the VW Vanagon & Westfalia Forums who have such shop lists made up by the members, & they get well used.

It's a suggestion for Sir Andy & the Mods & Admins on the Garage Forum to set up a Nailed Shops Topic. type.gif

Rich? Retired? Seems that'll never happen....lol

Yep, Rich is still there running his shop. I was just there last week. Geez, he's been my mechanic since 1980!

Louie is still there too, but Larry has retired. Still have memories of Doug from many years ago...he was a good mechanic.

Yeah, I've been going to Hans since 1975, & he did PPIs on probably a couple dozen 914s that year, before he gave his blessing on my 73 2L.

His original shop that he started in 1972 was literally a block down from my apartment in Huntington Beach, & I could walk there - or push it when the clutch cable broke or other no-start issues.

My Rick neighbor across the street had a 72 914/4 (1.7) who recommended him, & he'd taken his 914 to Hans at Circle Porsche, then his own shop, since he got it new in Aug. `71 from Circle.

Hans is like Rich - except Austrian - & can listen to me pull up & diagnose things by the sound - as can Rich B. I'm sure, just from talking with him.

You can't beat old school guys! wink.gif
