Full Version: Someone interested in saving a real 914-6?

I will post pictures of the car as soon as I get them from Jeff. This one is the owners new 914-6

Rothsport Racing for anyone who doesn't know is one of those very special Porsche places where magic happens. Also know as Cary's Day "Job" for the past few years. It is a very high end race prep and support shop that also makes the engines for the Rod Emory Outlaw and the Guntherworks cars.

Jeff has been doing this for decades and one of his customers has had a 914-6 stored with him for probably decades as well. This customer is getting up there in age and finally decided to go ahead and get this car restored. So they stripped it down to the tub and shipped it down to California for an acid dip. ($5,000) When it came back they discovered that the front end had been repaired with an new front clip and looked like Swiss cheese. So it needs a new front clip put on the car correctly. The back half of the car according to Cary is perfect and "looks like it's going down the assembly line"

At that point the owner decided that he wants to be able to still drive the car when its done and he's not getting any younger so he had Jeff go out and find him one. (That's what is in this picture) it's a beautiful car with a 2.7RS motor in it. Jeff is now getting ready to ship this back to the owner.

The owner has instructed him to sell the stripped car or cut all of the 914-6 parts off of it that have value and ship them with the other valuable 914-6 parts that were taken off of the car so he has something from that car (probably end up as wall art blink.gif ) So he is now working on scheduling the transport of the new car and all of the parts and has to start cutting or sell this in the next few days.

So this car is currently fully disassembled and in Tubs. It does not have an engine and transmission but Jeff does have an original 914-6 engine he would sell if you wanted it.

He is starting with asking $10k (I am sure because he has been paying to have it stored in the shop for over 20 years and that bill alone had to be well over double that.) I have talked with Cary and Jeff about the best plan for this car and we all have come to the conclusion that a new front clip from a 1970 914 is the way to go. Cary has the frame bench but is over a year out before he could get to it. If I didn't just get one car back from paint myself (and just picked up a race car for God knows what reason) I would be negotiating a deal on this but I don't have the space for the cars now and another one is not going to help right now. I am sure that I am going to look back and regret this but I am going to have to pass at this time but I don't want to see the car cut up and hope that someone in the community can work something out on this one.
You can call Rothsport Racing and talk to Jeff about the car at 503-822-5061

Let me know if I can do anything to help.

Too many pictures to upload so here is a Google drive folder https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=1f4S...223C5dMm15e_YO0
Matty900
It had steel flairs on the rear and fiberglass on the front. The dip took care of the front.

I can't get into the google drive to look at the photos. I should not look anyway, I have no idea where I would put it.

Google requires access before it will let me see the pics. Can you make them "public"?

I uploaded them into my 914Rubber account at its making me approve people. I have done that for all of the requests. Can't seem to figure out how to just make it public idea.gif
Matty900
I will just post more up here so you can see most of it and then you can do the drive request it you want all of them. This kind of sums it up. Good in back. Needs new front 1/2 of the car
Matty900
Here is how they "fixed it" that needs to just be redone with a better doner car from 1970
Matty900
Factory 6 mount is great
Matty900
Hell hole looks great

Vin is there. Not sure what the process is to transfer it to the new front clip but I am thinking it's something you document very well with the dmv and or police dept confused24.gif

10K is the Ask but make whatever offer you see fit to Jeff 503-822-5061

Cary was going over this morning to look at the car and maybe get some pictures of everything they took off of the car.

If someone does want to take on this project I have a complete 1970 with hell hole rot that I have been "saving" with a plan to do a restoration sometime in the next few years. The original bumpers are there and in great condition and as far as I know the front half is in great shape with no obvious problems, but these cars sometimes hold surprises.... If it would save a 914-6 I'd consider selling it, but not really looking to sell it under other circumstances. Not sure about price but I'm sure we could work out something reasonable. Hopefully someone will pick up this project and save it.
Gint
Sure would be a shame to cut it up.
Matty900
Just spoke with Jeff, owner instructed him to cut it up so unfortunately this one is probably gone. So sad icon8.gif
It's scheduled for Monday just incase someone was on the fence

This is the VIN from the front fender, yes? Does that mean that the "donor" for the front was a -6, or the original car was a -6 (reference original -6 engine mount), or it was a merging of two original -6s? confused24.gif Always interesting to see the things that happened to a car over its 50yr life.

What a shame
ri914
well cutting it up is not a great idea, there are plenty of 914's that can be cut up for wall art.

someone must want to build a 914-6.... that would be a great car. I can store it for free, but I am in RI...

maybe we can chip in and buy it for the forum? there must be 10000 members smile.gif a 1 dollar donation would make us all owners ....

One of our clients is buying the chassis and all the parts. If he changes direction
MiddleMotors will purchase it from him.

Awesome.. Was wheeling through in my mind how I could somehow pull this off.

Great news! I am glad that car will get saved. I had forwarded the link to someone whom I thought might be interested. Regardless, glad it is going to get saved. beerchug.gif

Vermont or Maine registration. Both are non-title states for vehicles 15 years old and older. I can help with that and have done in it many times on my own stuff. You can then register it in your state and obtain a title.

Just confirmed deal finalized this am.
Title had a 914xxxxxx VIN. Asked client to confirm there wasn't an error on the first front clip project.

Cary's client found another donor car (a tub rather than a complete car) closer to him with a salvageable front end. In reality I'm relieved that he did as this car, which I offered as a donor only because it would save a 914-6, really should be restored. It's complete, has some rare parts in good shape, and will shortly be looking for a new home that has the time and capacity to save it. It was to be my first hell hole project, until Covid resulted in the welding program I enrolled in to be cancelled. I look forward to seeing updates from Cary on the 914-6 "swiss cheese" project!

If that car was acid dipped, the longitudinals will need removed so the paint can be replaced. I'm sure the heater tubes are gone as well...wow, flashbacks from mine getting dipped. What a lot of work!

Both Ben and I would like to have a 1970 car. So if and when we have enough space and its still available we'll probably make a road trip. This one needs to be saved.
cary
Here is the donor the wife and I picked up on Saturday. A driven Idaho car.
The front clip I need looks to be in good shape. A couple spots will need some attention.
But I'll leave them alone until it comes back from the dip tank.
The car is cooked from the desert sun.
It will go into storage for a bit until we get a few projects on the road.

When the times comes I'll start a restoration thread. To me it will always be the Swiss Cheese car.

Having owned many 914s I have a serious question, how is the HellHole perfect and the Clip a disaster?

I'm going to assume it was a poor choice on the replacement clip. This was a race car. So one has to assume it had an event. Hence the fiberglass flares in the front, steel in the back. Rush job.
Or vice vesa. We'll know more when we dig into the build date in the trunk.
@molecvir

But it will be a ways off. We need to build up Scott's other car first.
Its journey is just about to start. It's Rothsport 3.6 dynoed at 322hp.

Maybe @rufus can shed some light on the history. He was the previous owner. But it was a long time ago. Sat in storage for quite some time.

I can’t shed much light on the history. I believe I have the phone numbers of the 2 (official ... I got it on an open title from a flipper) owners before me. I spoke to the earlier of them, Marlo, kinda recently. I may have talked to the one before me, but that was 10-15 years ago. IIRC Marlo said he bought the car and it just sat during his ownership. I also seem to recall an owner prior to him raced it. Because of the time elapsed, Marlo couldn’t provide any info on that owner.

Haven't looked at this thread in a while. Made me think what's harder; fixing rusted panels or fixing someone's patch job (noting the blob welding)?
