How can I tell what engine I have? Long block? 1.7? 1.8? 2.0? How can I tell that the engine came in a 914 and wasnt swapped from a Volkswagen? How do I know when it was made and if it matches the transmission/rest of the car? How can I tell if my car is matching numbers?

Porsche did not record the transmission numbers. If you want to pay them a bunch of money ($400 think ) and you tell them the engine number you have they will confirm if it is the original engine.

I'm not positive, but I believe if it has any of the engine number codes in that list, it was built for a 914 and all other codes were for VW applications. Hopefully somebody who knows for sure will chime in.

Also, if the code is NOT on that list I posted, it isn't a 914 engine. Bus engines have the dipstick in a different place. You can do a search to find out how to tell if the dipstick has been relocated on a bus case to use in a 914.
