What bothers me with the pic is that they are transfixed by the American metal and ignoring the 914

Well, only cool guys own 914s and nobody cool would add bumperettes, so no, it's a '74.
As for the GTO, It would have the letters G T O on the lower left grill where it appears to say LeMans.

It is a LeMans. The hood is a LeMans hood. (I grew up with one of these, mom had it from before I was born until 1977)
