Can you remove the fuel tank with the front trunk lid still in place, or must the lid be removed.

Not required. Comes out without interference.

You do have to tilt it slightly forward as you raise up the tank. Otherwise you will scratch the underside of the front trunk.
If you remove the lid and set it on top of the car it makes it much easier, but it is not required. Use a sharpie to scribe around the hinges so you can get it back in the same place.

I’ve removed and replaced the tanks in a lot of cars and never removed the hood. If you are worried about scratching the inside of the hood, just tape a piece of cardboard to it. You always risk damaging ng the hood anytime you remove and replace it.

That is my concern, more than the trouble of taking it off.
The cardboard trick will help.
