What’s the best way to statically time a 914? I have a 72 with a 1.8L bus motor. Any tips or tricks? Photos of the process would be greatly appreciated

Find TDC (top dead center) on cylinder #1 on the cooling fan . Find #1 by removing the distributor cap and point the rotor to # 1 wire. Connect a 12 volt light bulb between the point lead on the coil to ground. Back off the fan counterwise and then slowly turn the engine clockwise until the light comes on. I use a wrench on the alternator pulley. I found a good place to start is at 6 degrees BTDC. The engine will start and run fine until you use a timing light for a proper time.
