Does anyone have experience in replacing a turn indicator on an early 1/71 car?

I have the switch as a new VW part - different color wires to the same contacts as the old one / that part I get....../ but the leads are not long enough to go all the way down the steering column.

maybe splice and shrink wrap and then hope to stuff all of this spaghetti back in the hole.......

Better yet: does anyone in the Phoenix Scottsdale area know a good auto-electronics place that could take on thiis daunting task?
