Full Version: Too Many Holes. Get More Switches?

During a moment of brain fade, I made more holes than I need. I had recovered the front dash plate (for the second time--another story) and before sticking it on the dash frame, I cut open all the factory holes: 3 on the left and 3 on the right of the steering wheel. I then went on to install the dash top piece and mount the complete assembly in the car.

As soon as I started to feed the dash wiring I realized what I did. The left 3 holes are for the lights, hazard, and fog lights. On the right, the big hole is for the cigarette lighter.

What would go in the other switch holes on the right? Rear window defroster? Other?

More important, what should I do? My OCD self says to take it all apart and recover the dash plate again--and only cut the holes I have switches for. Or I can add switches (I have a need for at least one new switch.

Sell the car. You have introduced two new unrepairable "hellholes" biggrin.gif

1) eject button, clearly marked
2) flame switch
3) smoke switch
4) noise (open exhaust)

Been there, done that! Added a green lens foglight switch to the right of the steering column on my '73. Balances out the yellow lens switch on the left! first.gif

Switches for the rear window defroster, and windshield wiper/squirter for the early cars.

IIRC the left of the Cig Lighter is the Rear Window Defogger, so get that switch, & it's up to you if you want to also get the harness & defogger rear window - which may be handy in SW Colo crispy mornings/nights drives.

In any case - the rightmost hole closest to the radio is ideal for the USB &/or Aux port - as Mark suggested.

Woody's Customs here in SoCal (Costa Mesa) has a full line of Porsche 911/912 radio/audio upgrades - both to update your vintage radio, & classic look new units - as well as pod/box speakers to get 4-way sound placed under or behind 914 seats, hidden & classic antennas - manual & auto/power, USB/Aux Ports, etc.

They're regulars at the big March 1st weekend Porsche Lit & Swap Meets, & used by many classic P-car owners with the local Porsche crowd & PCA etc.

In addition to their shop here in OC, they sell online & by phone for distance customers.

Note that theirs are plug-n-play (unlike Retro Sound, etc.), & note that their items may only be marked for 911/912 & 356, but they work for 914 too - just call or email them if you want to verify it.

Have at it! popcorn[1].gif

Show us some pix of your final solution too. type.gif

I swapped out the lighter for combo voltmeter/USB charger,
a push button switch for windshield washer &
an indicator light for same.

what is the stock diameter of those holes other than the lighter one? How much do you have to hog it out to fit a USB, etc?

Thanks for the humor, info, and suggestions. I am leaning towards installing 2 more switches, and use one for audio system power on/off.

Speaking of audio, I decided to eliminate the stock radio in the dash, and made a blank plate. Instead, I will install a hidden receiver that should have modern performance and wired or wireless phone connectivity.
