Don't know if the 1.7's had sodium filled exhaust valves or not, but when starting rebuild on a 2.0, starting to rebuild the heads, I gently rapped the valve stems with a plastic mallet to see if any were stuck, one snapped off near the head and was clearly corroded both internally & externally. NEVER re-use 40 yr old sodium filled exhaust valves !!

Ummm... Id say simply that you probably shouldnt use any valve that looks like its been underwater for a couple of decades!!!!!
