Car impounded for 30 days. This is about 30 miles from my house, must have been coming back from Vegas. For us locals we call this stretch of highway the CHP 100 plus zone. Lots of tickets handed out for 100 and higher MPH.

Curious what the cost of the ticket is? Pretty expensive joy ride. I've only had my 914=6 up to 140 and that was when I was in my 20's in the 80's. I would never do that now. I have to much to lose.

Looks like it says "Unlicensed" too....

Edit: Yes "Vehicle Code 12500(a) VC - Driving w/o a License in California"

Yikes.
Cairo94507
Seeing the 12500 CVC added onto the citation is extra troubling. I hope the court jails him and orders the car destroyed. The asshat couldn't bother to get a license, yet he is burning up the roads at 160-plus. No mercy at all.

Don't take it out on the car. It is not at fault. It should be impounded and sold, not destroyed.

In the late 60's-70's the Western States ( NM, CO, SD, WY) had unrestricted speed limits. As long as you did not get too stupid and there was not any traffic you could haul ass all day long at a 100 with out any problem.

Good point Clay. My beef is not with the car- it's the asshat driver. Court ordered sale and funds to be sent to educate teenaged drivers.

No plates. What insurance....

I'm sure he got a ride to jail.

160 mph = 257 kmh in aus.

car would be crushed here. sadly.
+ a very good lawyer to stay out of jail.

in the offenders defense, i see some pretty asshat driving here at speeds below the legal limit (strict 110 kmh on interstates). said asshats are too busy doing everything but driving. it would be nice to see a jail sentence for switching on the cruise control and getting your phone out. penalties - phone crushed, offender jailed, car donated to a charity of choice.

lucky you.

back in the 90s when i lived in western australia, there was some tolerance for driving at high speed once a certain distance from perth. open flat two lane roads, long desert distances. i think it took me about 5 full minutes (maybe it was 10) to get the 1.8 to 105 mph. and the nose started coming up at around 95. there was no one else within about 200 miles of that aerodynamic experiment.

i have to memorize all the mph conversions to kph now when i drive so i don't risk a ticket in our zero tolerance environment. the cops are theoretically allowed no discretion in measured speed, ie 1 kph over is a ticket. in practice they tell me they apply 5 still.

Amateurs. Montana had a "reasonable and prudent" law before AND AFTER the federal 55 mph limit until 1999. Locals like to blame maniac out of state drivers for abusing the law and causing it to disappear. In reality, the MT Supreme Court struck it down as too subjective to be fairly enforced. Passing through when the law was in place, I saw plenty of vehicles with MT tags driving anything BUT reasonable or prudent. Moving here a couple years after speed limits had been instated, the locals still seemed to have extremely heavy right feet. One day while driving the legal 70 mph on the Interstate, I car passed me such a speed I got curious how fast they were driving and decided to try to pace them. My old truck started shaking at 95 mph as the car continued to get smaller in the windshield. Just as I decided to back off, another car whizzed past me like I was standing still, quickly overtook the first speeder, and dissipated over the horizon.

Soon after, I told that story to a co-worker who is 5th generation Montanan. He reminded me that only two years before, you could theoretically drive down the highway at 150 mph while swigging whiskey from a bottle and a loaded gun hidden under your seat and not break a single law. Of course we also had among the highest per capita traffic fatality rate and drunk driving accident rate in the country. That kind of freedom sounds fun, but the reality is quite different.

Car......Porsche, going to assume 911
Road conditions.....4 lane freeway. Straight in that area, clear weather.
Traffic........SB 15 on a Saturday always moderate with lots of trucks coming out of Barstow truck stops.

120mph could be fun with Zero traffic. Kill yourself it’s on you.
160 mph just plain stupid and odds are you will kill innocent people.

Crashing in the desert is a different animal. Getting a clear airway to Intubate the victim is almost impossible from the blood mixed with dirt-sand that’s completely filled there mouth, nostrils and blocked there airway.

There are no facts that warrant this behavior.
Sorry but I have had to request the Coroner to many times on that stretch of highway.

Yes....I agree...let's all stop being judges.

For those that want to be and live in or near San Berdo County here in the great So Cal wildernes...just show up at the court at the time stated and see what the judge says.

Carry on.

...come to Germany where the Autobahn is... biggrin.gif

Actually we have some unrestricted stretches left on our Autobahn´s, but traffic usually is to heavy and with all those electronic helpers in nowadays vehicles the number of stupid drivers is increasing rapidly. Smartphone related accidents have outnumbered drunk driving accidents here. Mostly head on crashes, wrong lane - oops.

The "Green Party" (I´d rather call them socialists barf.gif ) is pushing hard on a general speed limit and chances are quite high they finally get through with it after the next elections in September. This is one of their main emphasis besides "saving the climate". Our car industry has suffered some hard blows recently with the (forced) switch to "electric" and the "diesel gate". Still - our Autobahns are by far the safest roads and I - and many others - hope they dont get the speed limit through.

Hi wonkipop,

I remember driving in Australia back in 2007. I visited a friend of mine who lived in Melbourne back then for a years work assingnment. He came to pick me up at the airport - in Sydney! dry.gif
We drove to his home in Melbourne and I remember those endless stretches of lonely, straight outback roads. We pushed it down to the metal... happy11.gif
Maybe we were just lucky back then not to end up beeing nailed be the police.

Anyways, great country, loved it!

no worries arno.

its all gone downhill since then.

those roads you were on though are not outback roads.
but probably seemed like that to you.
you would have been either on the main interstate (hume highway) or the coast road (pacific highway). or not far off (but maybe your mate knew a few good backroads running in parallel). but still what we call civilisation.

around that time i was doing a job up in albury, repeated trips up the hume from melb.
the cops wouldn't bother unless you were out past 130kph. and if you were polite about it when you got pulled in, there was a warning and on your way. not now.
i remember on one of those trips in summer i decided to come back over the alps. while i was up high coming down into omeo i forgot where i was. i probably had the renault 172 out past 160ks. great road. came around a big sweeping bend and the cop was there standing on the side of the road waving both hands in a downward motion. so i slowed down. that was it. today he'd have me in the back of the divvy van.

there are still some roads you can try out on responsibly.
but not right now.
covid isolation of the country from the rest of the world has every tom dick and harry out there on the roads driving like kooks. thousands of them. all on their phones in front of swaying caravans.
but its better than chinese tourists. (not a racist). apparently they get their license in a simulator. you know when you come across one because their car is stopped on the highway while they get out and look. they don't even pull off the road!!
914forme
I get it, and yes it is against the law.

Stupid - no license
Stupid - if it is real reckless operation, but that gets slapped onto all sorts of items and is very subjective.

Here is my gripe.

Enforce the correct laws and things get a lot better. Yes even Germany has their share of accidents, and they do have speed limits, but they also have stretches with no speed limits. And this is what I found over there, keep right except to pass, and everyone is respectful. Why they enforce the keep right law, it helps so much.

You can have a Merc van towing a car under a cover, looks an awful lot like a Porsche. going a whole 65 MPH in the far right lane, and getting passed by a Merc in the middle lane doing 150 MPH, while being passed by a McLaren, a GT2RS and a Panamera Turbo going somewhere north of 175 MPH. Was hoping to see a Ranger Rover with a Camera or two. But sadly no. Everyone was happy, everyone was safe, everyone understood the rules of the road. It was driving Nirvana on a public highway, Run I made on a Holiday weekend from Stuttgart to Munich. I was the guy in the S class Merc. Would have preferred to be in the McLaren, but love the one your with. Latter saw the Truck and Porsche on the road just on the other side of my bench while enjoying a beer3.gif and some local food. 911 GTish thing with a bunch of sensors and camera camo, to keep the pictures in the press.

Enforce the correct laws and this will allow everyone to enjoy the drive. Drive responsibly and respectfully.

BTW, this morning on the way into work, I was passed on the left by a Mercury Barge doing 80 on a two lane, through the intersection with oncoming traffic. That incident put at least 10 people lives at risk, I did not do a head count just the car count involved. That was truly breaking several laws.

Passing in a non passing zone!
Reckless operation or at least incredulous operation, not a law, but good enough for me.
Speeding 80 in a 45
None signal usage

I am sure I could find a few more if I was not assessing the situation and the options I had tactically.

When I read the title I thought it was a factory test driver. I was hoping for a late career change opportunity. biggrin.gif

thats a big one in aus (or perhaps it is just the state i live in) now. it once was a law to keep in the left lane unless overtaking. same as your keep in right lane.

at the same time the state govt.decided to raise revenue by introducing zero tolerance measure for speeding, they quietly withdrew the hard and fast law on staying left. its turned our freeways and interstates into arteries with clots. cars seem to bunch up in groups of 5-10 travelling too tightly together at 110kph all on cruise control across all lanes (or two on the interstates). it gets hairy when a double B road train is part of the mix.

i noticed on my last trip two weeks ago the cops were cruising up and down the interstate breaking up the clots. a highway patrol bmw right up the backside of right hand lane loiterers seems to produce a reaction involving moving left that no other car can.

as arno notes it was once an enjoyable experience on an aussie interstate just covering miles, now its..........like everywhere else?

About 5 years ago in Reno during this time of the year with everything blooming and pollen so thick you had to wash your car daily, I was driving my truck with the cruise control set for 50 (the speed limit) and I had a sneezing fit. I guess I must have been jerking the wheel with each sneeze and I was immediately pulled over. The cop (RPD) asked for the usual license and registration and asked if I had been drinking. I made the true comment that I had a beer last March and he turned and walked away. I sat there patiently until I sensed him tap the taillight as cops will do and looked back to see him holding his gun in his right hand. HOLY SHIT I thought, and turned in my seat to face him. I said 'What the hell are you doing with your gun drawn.' He says 'you didn't tell me about your concealed carry permit, are you armed?' I said that 'my gun was in the case, locked, in the backseat.' First of all, Nevada is an open carry state. Second, if I was armed I am not required to inform him, it is a courtesy and as he hadn't been particularly courteous to me, well... He wrote me a ticket and I called the police station and they sent out a Sargent who must have been close as he was there in a minute. The ticket was for Reckless Driving as I swerved. I filed a complaint and the ticket was reduced to a seatbelt violation with no fine and as he was ordered not to show up in court, even that was dropped.
But 160? Public highway? You go to jail.

Always a good idea to keep both hands on the wheel and inform the officer immediately that you have a CC permit. That's what I do and they appreciate it. I've never had a problem. Even when they pulled me over for doing 140 in a 65. BTW I got off.

I got out of a ticket in a similar situation. Years ago, I was on my way home from the range, I got stopped for speeding. This was pre-concealed carry, and cops were really sensitive about firearms in the car. My pistol was sitting on the passenger seat with the slide locked open and no magazine in it. When he walked up to the car, I had both windows down, and I was sitting dead still with my hands on my head, fingers interlocked. When he asked for my license and insurance papers, I explained to him that I was coming home from the gun range, and my pistol was on the passenger seat. I then said that we would both be more comfortable if he held onto it while we talked. He walked behind the car to the passenger side, looked into the window, picked up the pistol and hooked it in his belt. He then walked back to my side of the car, and I gave him my license and insurance info.

He ran my info, and we talked for a few minutes. He wanted to compare my S&W 659 with his Browning High Power. I offered to meet him at the range if he wanted to try it.

He let me go with a warning. And he thanked me for being so overly careful about the pistol on the seat.

It is good to be nice to cops. They have an incredibly tough job. Normal people don't need to make it any harder.
