...come to Germany where the Autobahn is... biggrin.gif

Actually we have some unrestricted stretches left on our Autobahn´s, but traffic usually is to heavy and with all those electronic helpers in nowadays vehicles the number of stupid drivers is increasing rapidly. Smartphone related accidents have outnumbered drunk driving accidents here. Mostly head on crashes, wrong lane - oops.

The "Green Party" (I´d rather call them socialists barf.gif ) is pushing hard on a general speed limit and chances are quite high they finally get through with it after the next elections in September. This is one of their main emphasis besides "saving the climate". Our car industry has suffered some hard blows recently with the (forced) switch to "electric" and the "diesel gate". Still - our Autobahns are by far the safest roads and I - and many others - hope they dont get the speed limit through.

Greets, Arno

The difference is in Germany most have good autobahn etiquette, overtake then pull in. This is not the case in many places, whilst I was living in the US i saw so much bad stupid driving at very low speeds so the fixation on speeds is ridiculous.

I sat at 140mph on an Autobahn for quite some time, no issues apart from when I had to pull over to allow some Audi A8 to cruise by.

The green Party are a bunch of tofu munching morons want an all out war on the motorist and need to be stopped. They are using this climate change malarkey to push their stupid agenda. here in the uk we have another bunch of cretins who are pushing their "20 is plenty" mantra to reduce speeds even more. If they succeed with that it should be mandatory that this extended to Ambulances and Fire Brigade so when they or a family member die etc due to a slow response then they can actually say that they don't care.

The war on the motorist is getting ridiculous together with these Electric car Zealots...

What we really need is an engine that is fuelled by the tears of Greta...

Having lived in Europe, and traveled extensively with experience on both the German Autobahn and the Italian Autostrade's . . . you don't even know the 1/2 of it here in the US. av-943.gif

US drivers are among the worst in the world.

Of course when you get off the Autostrade particularly as you go south or to Sicily...some parts make US drivers look good. laugh.gif

Nice summer day....heading home from work (around 7pm)...just got on a divided freeway. Was in my 928, tunes playing, sunroof open....nobody in front of me nor behind me until...flashing lights and a bleep of a siren. I was pulled over by a state cop. He walked up (turns out he was heading down an onramp while I buzzed by) and asked if I new how fast I was going...I politely replied that I really didn't and was just enjoying the drive home from work on a nice day. He said he was doing 95 when he entered onto the freeway and I was still pulling away! I'm thinking oh shit, reckless driving and I'm going to jail....he stepped back and looked at the car then said: I loved this car in the movie Risky Business, I'd hate to see you and this car wrapped around a tree....slow down and have a nice evening. He then turned, walked away, drove off and beeped his horn when he went passed me!

I’ve gotten off with warnings just by being polite and honest (hard for me but you know...). The last one when I made a rolling stop at a stop sign (no cars, back road) the cop said he was just looking for drunk drivers and said have a nice night.

It is good to be nice to cops. They have an incredibly tough job. Normal people don't need to make it any harder.

Driving more than sixty years without a ticket, though once I forgot to put on new tabs. I think it is frightening to have to pull over random nut jobs as part of everyday work.
But I have for many years wondered how much you have to break the law to deserve to be in the left lane (you hardly ever find me there). So, a person is in urban traffic and passing car after car at ten mph over the limit. Someone comes behind them wanting to do twenty over. Does the latter have a beef because the former won’t duck into the right lane? Don’t tell me this isn’t real because it is. There is no Autobahn anywhere in the US. Get into Montana or the Dakotas or maybe Delaware and sure, the highway beckons. I am tired of having some big ass vehicle inches from my bumper when I have only one ton to their three.

That's an odd way to put it. @worn -- the following is not directed at you. Rather attempting to answer the question you posed and as a commentary on observed traffic behavior, not your personal behavior.

Simply put, the left lane is a passing lane. This is where lane discipline in Europe or even our neighbors in Canada seem to have a better grasp of traffic flow and common courtesty.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passing_lane#...20to%20overtake.

"Common practice and most law on United States highways is that the left lane is reserved for passing and faster moving traffic, and that traffic using the left lane must yield to traffic wishing to overtake.

The United States Uniform Vehicle Code states:

Upon all roadways any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic ...

It is also illegal in many states in the US to use the "far left" or passing lane on a major highway as a traveling lane (as opposed to passing), or to fail to yield to faster moving traffic that is attempting to overtake in that lane. For example, Colorado's "Left Lane Law" states:

A person shall not drive a motor vehicle in the passing lane of a highway if the speed-limit is sixty-five miles per hour

or more unless such person is passing other motor-vehicles that are in a non-passing lane...[1]"

Unfortunately in the US, this is a law that the police choose not to enforce in favor of simply sitting in the median and clocking traffic. The offense of "speeding" is much easier to enforce and yields more $$/hr for various jurisdictions than enforcemnt of proper lane use would. As a result we now have a large swath of the population that is paralyzed with fear of "speeding" and then decide that since they are doing the speed limit, they might just as well spread out across all available lanes. To hell with the proper use of a passing lane.
worn
I hear you, but in my scenario the slower driver was using the left lane to pass. It passed one car and then although it could then squeeze over it would have to slow down to avoid the next car right ahead in the right lane - that he would pass rather quickly if he simply stayed in the left lane. When this happens to me I am in my 2200 lb car and have a pickup truck so close behind me I cannot see the windshield in my rear view mirror. Personally, I would probably just pull over to the right and accept the fact that I am gonna have to slow down.
I am not gonna say teeners shouldn't speed, because driving fast is one reason to have a sports car (although driving the limit in a 914 is a ton of fun more than breaking the law in an SUV). I will say that we lose a lot of young and promising people every year in car crashes and almost every traffic fatality would have been avoided if all of the rules were followed.
Where we probably agree is that as a group 914 owners probably actually like driving and take it more seriously than those relying on lane assist and other props that enable careless driving.
worn
I should add that I very much agree that traffic shouldn't be a spread out melee. I hate people weaving in and out of traffic swerving through all of the lanes as their fancy takes them. You are right that the proper lane for passing should be the left.
Cairo94507
At my age and experience driving, rather than get into a "game of chicken" with people on the highway, I just stay to the right when possible. If I am in the far left lane and some vehicle starts rapidly closing on me, I put on my right turn signal and move to the right to allow them to pass. I would rather avoid problems and just drive down the road.

We have a lot of lifted, large 4x4 trucks with wheels protruding well beyond their fender lips (illegal) that climb on the rear bumper of anyone who dare not yield right of way.

Back in the day, police officers took pride in knowing the Vehicle Code and enforcing those type of violations. (If you have ever had one of those douches pass you and toss a rock into your windshield and crack it, you know what I mean.)

I have spent many years driving interstates and pulling a 43' 5th wheel trailer in my photography business. Now retired but still frequently traveling, sometimes in my 914, or my Cayman or Cayenne, the interstates are clogged with drivers, often women, cruising in their private left lane while talking on a cell phone. Amazing how often several cars will stack up behind them, and the right lane is empty! This is perhaps a result of some driving like its a competition, or a birthright of being an exceptional driver, and I will often pass the fools by going to the real cruising right hand lane. confused24.gif

We are Americans, and many Americans are just plain stoopid. Operating a motor vehicle is probably the most dangerous activity the average person will undertake, and a large percentage of us here in the good US of A do not have a clue how to drive. I see it everyday

You are an engineer so I can't let this slide. You are assuming driver "goodness" is normally distributed. We don't know that. Given how astronomically bad the worst drivers are, the distribution could easily be skewed and 73% of driver could indeed be better than the average. Now if 73% of drivers think they are better than the median driver, 23% would be wrong regardless of distribution. Just a little statistics 101 because, come on now, we are better than average. biggrin.gif

We do need to remember two things though: a) The automotive sector is basically glorified bean counting*, and b) driver "goodness" is totally some skewed fat tail distribution...they certainly didn't teach that in engineering school. laugh.gif

We had a sales guy at the Suzuki dealership who tried to take an off ramp at 100+ -trooper clocked him at 140 on the way by.

I was sent up with the van to collect the bike -a ball of metal and mud and a very sore kid.
