The proximity of the metal box to the terminals is a bit disturbing

I'd carve a little bit of material away from around where the terminals rest with a Dremel tool. I doubt that would affect the integrity of the box.

Had a couple of questions as to size....here's a link to dimension below...
and no there is absolutely not any problems with the terminals with screw down or automotive type terminals used on the Odyssey 680 battery
...I've used these on many race cars and off-road applications...this mount is even FAA approved.
And yes a 680 will start a 914 4 or 6....I've used them on 911 applications.

Sorry I don't have a pic, but I've used this battery on my small -6
for many years with no problems. You can easily install it in the
original battery area if you cut a 16-gauge piece that is just the size
to fit inside the tray. Cut a hole for the standard bolt where you
would normally have the clamp, and the other edge touching the
body side is held down by the lip there. Then just make holes in
it to match the holes in the odyssey mount.
