Is the rubber boot that sits on top and round the sensor just lift off? Looks like the edge/lip on it is just sitting on top of the engine sheet metal.
Also, does it take 24 mm deep well socket to remove the sensor?

Good luck unless you have the VW tool,, The new senders are smaller..

The rubber boot should come off relatively easily. As far as the sender, I went through about 4 different 24mm sockets (regular and deep) before I found one that fit nicely around the distributor. Most deep sockets will interfere with the distributor. Removing the distributor makes it much simpler to remove the sender.
