Hello friends.

It's a '73 2.0.

As title and description states ... my odometer is not working (neither is the trip odometer). The speedometer is working (although the needle seems to be bouncing a little bit during acceleration and deceleration).

Any suggestions on where to start with trouble shooting?

Thanks in advance.
Steve
It’s most likely a plastic gear that died in the speedometer. There are how to guides on Pelican on how to fix it or take the easy way out, spend a couple hundred bucks and send it to north Hollywood speedometer and let them fix it.

Common problem. It is usually a pot metal gear inside that gets loose on the shaft rather than a plastic gear. You can repair it yourself if you are careful removing the lens bezel. Here is the link to the Pelican article covering the procedure.

Note that simply crimping the the gear as suggested in the article is usually only temporary. Mine quit again after about 200 miles of use. The second time I used a bit of JB weld and a punch to deform the gear for a better and more permanent fit. Still working 1,100 miles later.

Thanks guys.

I read that article Pelican article. Not sure I have the patience for the DIY repair. Think I'd rather leave it to a pro gauge guy.

Since I"m in Northern Virginia, I was going to use this local Porsche/VW gauge repair shop I've seen advertise on The Samba from time to time (as it would not require me to ship to and from).

Has anybody used or heard anything about Specialty Gauge in Manassas, VA?

They're local for me - I sure would like to avoid having to ship if at all possible. But only if it's a shop that folks on this board can vouch for.
