There have been several recent posts about members acquiring 928s & 924s and I have just picked up this 1986 944 Turbo!

This is a one owner car with a Clean CarFax that was purchased new from Steve Taub in Santa Monica with extensive maintenance history. Paint is pretty oxidized from being outside the last few years. It has got original Fuchs and optional Limited Slip Differential. After taking care of some deferred maintenance, I am going to drive this thing like crazy driving.gif If values continue to pop, I will paint it in the spring and decide whether to keep her or not based on the ownership experience.

With values on the rise for transaxle cars, it looks like their time has come!

I am wanting one of the 951s after my 928 is done and sold.

You will be amazed how well a bunch of compound & polish and a handful of pads can turn out.

oh - you'll have a blast with that. I had an 86 and an 89 and they swallow a lot of road. Quickly. I think the turbo lag is fun and they have a real personality.

A good bud of mine said that in the 2 years he owned a 951 it was a perfect canyon car + highway Cruiser.
Problems were; sticky parking brake cable, and various drops of coolant from aging hose, clamps, joints // just sounds like normal wear + use things.
Can't go wrong, like you say transaxle Porsche values will only go up !

Hello Jeffrey.....is this a before and after or a CGI rendering? OMG !!! Keep going....and please be careful...these cars are so VERY FAST they can hit 120 mph and more in a blink....so don't blink smile.gif All the best,

Congrats! Looks like fun! I've always had an interest in those as well.

Yay, another 951 owner! They really are pretty amazing cars. A lot of the maintenance is not too bad on them, such as timing and balance belts, water pump, etc, but they definitely have their own unique challenges.

If you want, check out the video my brother did on my car:
Transaxle Greatness: Why the 944 Turbo is an 80s icon

Seems like there’s a number of 944 owners here, so be sure to ask if you need advice. Also Rennlist 944 Turbo sub-forum is a huge resource. For parts, check out Paragon Parts, Lindsey Racing (dangerous waters!), Only944, 944Online. Have fun!

You guys are KILLING me biggrin.gif . Are parts available for 944/951 and how expensive are they?

I’ve been driving mine to past couple 914 events since I sold my 914. Great highway car, loads of fun to drive and it keeps up with the big boys better than a 914-1.7.

Parts are definitely available for the 944/951 cars. The price depends on the part but expect to pay the typical "Porsche Tax" for any part you buy.

They are a lot of fun. They are reasonably fast stock and can go up from there all the way to stupid fast depending on how much work and $$ you want to throw at them.

I rebuilt the engine and did some upgrades on my old 86 951 and got 323/326 hp/trq at the wheels. The relatively light weight and that much power made it a beast.

My current 944 S2 rebuild/upgrade project is on a whole different level.

Thanks everyone for chiming in and sharing info and pics of your cars:

@Chris914n6 Paint correction is in the plans, however there are a lot of contaminants that will remain in the finish.

@burton73 Yes, the wheels are 7s up front and 8s in the rear with 951 part numbers. These were only available for the '86 MY

@ValcoOscar P-Car hoarder for sure, however I learned from the best! poke.gif

@FlacaProductions Love your black with linen pics, very Miami Vice and hopefully you wore the blazer with shoulder pads to go with it!

@Second Wind Not a CG rendering, just a good wash!

@Mayne Will check out the video for sure!

Nice! Love the 951. I miss my 89.. It was a great car. Replaced the exhaust and original wg, it ripped! Nice acquisition wink.gif

That’s funny I also bought a 944 this year.
86 NA white over red.
Really wishing I bought a turbo.
They have lots of weird issues but nothing is super crazy to deal with other than say the clutch. That’s obnoxious to change.

Glad it worked out Jeff. I cant wait to canyon cruise with you!

Whoa! Seeing this for the first time. smile.gif

Congrats Jeffrey! smilie_pokal.gif

I always wanted a 944. I believe like the 914 they also suffered the rejection from the Porsche purist at the time. That is probably why I always liked them. biggrin.gif

Sounds like a very nice find! Enjoy! driving.gif

Congrats! They are a fun car and it is amazing how cheap they are.

I didn't see it mentioned but Clark's Garage is an excellent resource.

I would but to far away.

Great thread. Would love to find a solid 86 951!

I know where I can get a 924T for $1500, not bad shape but it has a blown auto tranny. Same guy has a 924S for the same money, It had an issue too, I forget what, but for the coin it was not a deal breaker.
I was thinking of buying one to make a winter beater, but I couldn't beat the economics of a Honda Civic beater.
FRUNKenstein
Big fan of the transaxle cars with both an ‘87 928S4 and an ‘87 951 in the stable.

Interesting history on the plates as they were special issue back in 1986!

Yes, and unfortunately the Year of Manufacture program only goes up through 1980 so my 1983 is stuck with lipstick plates. Hopefully in a few years they will extend the YOM program and I can get the sunset or the blue plates.

Either way you should keep yours biggrin.gif

Been working through the refresh and still a few things to button up mechanically.

The dreaded oil pan seal needs replacement and still dealing with a hot start issue that is not the DME relay so will look at the injectors and fuel dampener next.

Did have the opportunity to give it a DIY exterior detailing and ceramic coat. Paint is nice and shiny now, but still pretty baked on the roof.

Car handles extremely well and took it back to the location for WCR 2019 at the top of San Gabriel Canyon Road this past Saturday. driving.gif

Lookin' good! What did you use for ceramic coat and what are you impression of application and final appearance? Considering it for my 914.

@flacaproductions

The product is Armor Shield IX from Avalon King

https://avalonking.com/

Looks great & not difficult to apply, however it needs to cure indoors for several days. There is a lot of information on their website. Liked it so much that I did my 986 as well and will apply it to the 914 when I get time.

The prep is time consuming as it requires the following steps:

Iron remover
Clay Bar
Compound
Polish
Ceramic
Optional Top Coat to extend the life of the Cermaic Coat which seems worth it given the amount of prep required.
