Hi guys,

I've read a lot of engine rebuild threads and I am also following Ian on the 2056cc engine build but I am bit overloaded with info.

My car is 74 2.0 FI and an engine rebuild will come sooner or later .... I will not do the rebuild myself but before I talk to a shop I want to know what parts (brand !)
are needed and what machining needs to be done. Just want to know what you guys would do so I can compare to what the shop wants to do.

What I want :

* reliability (so not another rebuild 20K miles later)
* want to keep the fuel injection
* want euro spec
* a bit more oomph so 2056 cc (to keep the FI) instead of stock 2.0
* affordable but reliable parts (sorry can't afford a Raby engine or kit)

What do I need and which brand ?

* new pistons - 96 mm ?
* new cylinders ?
* new camshaft (which one ?)
* complete seal kit ?
* SSI heat exchangers ? (have a triad exhaust)
* new valves and valveguides ?
* keep the original FI or aftermarket modern injection ?

What needs to be done to the engine ?

* resurfacing heads ?
* valves ?
* does the MPS needs adjustment (or replacement ?)

I see kits, pistons, cylinders all over internet but what are the good reliable
and affordable brands ?

A complete list with suggested parts and brands would be ideal.

Thks in advance

cheers
Dax

I pieced my rebuild kit from multi sources to try to safe a few bucks and reuse where I can...you will eat up the savings in shipping cost

Heads were back order of 6-8 months.. so plan ahead

Here: Is a list of some of the wins and losses on my 2056 build:

Just completed similar rebuild to 2056 - like you on a budget in having to import everything plus vat and duty if from outside EU. Assuming your case, heads ,crank etc are ok and stock (big assumption) I would go for:

-change all the bearings
-new injectors
-aa 96mm piston set
-new valves and guides
-new or reground cam and new lifters to suit the FI, send mine of to US for regrind about €400 in all
-mps rebuild if needed
-oil pump - id say optional if your is in good shape
-seal kit plus the 2 end seals
-clutch kit
-change all fuel lines

adding it up it cost me about €2500-3000 in parts to fully rebuild all of above, that was with a lot of shopping around. Machine shop cost were on top - just to give you an idea

Yes you can do more and buy higher spec parts, but that you be the minimum I would feel and should give a small power bump

Heritage parts can ship from Germany, and "stock" aa piston, heads etc but man its slow plan and order parts months ahead I would say. partsworks.de also good on some stuff.

Thanks for the replies.

Clutch is new and fuel lines are ss tangerine.
Also have a 123 distributor.
Will further check on the AA pistons.

I am close to Germany so think I can find the parts
in Europe.

Thks again
