Early flashers up to 72 are different than the later ones. Not sure what the difference was though. Going to be hit and miss I think. Some indicate the factory flashers do not work with certain years. All are 4 pole models. Lots of sellers will try to sell you 3 pole VW. See if some one has a OEM used one.

Looks like an astable multi-vibrator circuit.

My first suspicion would be that the electrolytic capacitor has gone bad. Second guess, one of the transistors.

Probably can be fixed pretty easily unless it was the relay that gave up the ghost but that is the component least likely to have failed.

Thanks guys. When I pulled it during the dash restoration, the unit fell apart in my hand. So it worked when it was assembled.. but...
