Just had a question as to whether it means anything or not. Looking at purchasing a 914 and I see that some cars have the raised 914-2.0 on the back and some have just a decal with said numbers.

Does this note anything about the car?

All cars through 1975 have raised 3 dimensional numbers. 1976 models have vinyl decals.

...and 70-72 4 cylinder cars being all 1.7 only had the 914 emblem. Starting in 73, the 1.7 or 2.0 emblem was added next to the 914.

914-6 had 914-6 emblem, obviously. smile.gif

Thank you for the education.

You still have to check the engine as some people have put old bus or 1.7/1.8 engines in 914's.

Top right corner click on "914 info" and the engine codes for 914 engines are in there.
Also only the 914 2.0 intake to head is 3 bolts, all other T4 heads are 4 bolt intakes.

So it should be GC when I check it.

Thank you for that. Will also check for 3 bolts.

Cheers

What if a 1.7L engine has been bored out to accept 2.0L pistons but the case number is still for a 1.7 and the case is about the only thing left of the original engine as most everything else has been changed out?

The gas tank sticker might still have the tire size shown as 165 SR15 would be a good hint because a 2.0 tank sticker should have the tire size as 165 HR15 as far as i know. The VIN, Chassis, and Transaxle numbers would be of no use without a Window Sticker or possibly a Bill of Sale, and maybe a COA which often contain mistakes or are missing information. Just asking what else might be obvious or able to look up on a list or database available to anyone. Tin numbers maybe? If original, legible and still on the engine.

A 76 or newer will need a smog check every other year in CA, unless this car is perfect, I’d find a 75 or earlier model…
