I wonder is there any place that can make a custom length of 986 shifter cables that would be about 3-4" shorter than the stock cables?

I think @tygaboy had found some for his trick shifter. Not cheap if I recall.

I went with a Numeric shifter and their cables. They offered longer or shorter than stock, at least when I bought from them. Maybe they'd make a custom length? Wouldn't hurt to give them a call. Cables are listed at $486.99

The numeric cables come with ball ends that work well. I have them on my car.


If you don't want to alter the body of your car, you can remove the flange on the shifter end of the cables and run them through the shift rod and speedo cable holes. Once you get them in the car, just add a second nut on the cable to replace the flange.

I heard back from numeric racing, and he said they can make custom length cables.

I think it probably is too late Charlie on the altering the body, cuz they made a hole in the firewall to get the cable through.
Probably need an idea on some sort of grommet to help close the gap around where the cable comes through the firewall at this point.

Do you by chance have a picture of what you are talking about on the flange idea?

The cable ends have to be modified so you don't have to cut the firewall.


Here is a picture of the numeric racing cables.

It is not a close up as I like, but if you look at the place where the nuts are on the cables, you will see they are captured by a T shaped flange on the end of the cable casing. This is how you attach the cable to the shifter or the transmission.

If you look at this picture of my shift cables installed in my car....

You will see there are no flanges. They have been machined off, and replaced with a second nut. That is so the cables would fit in the chassis holes for the shift rod and speedometer cable. The only hole I put in to install the shifter was the one in the top of the tunnel.

And the wooden block is to raise the center box up enough for the cables to pass under it.

As mentioned Numeric will make custom length cables with optional metal rod ends which is what I'll end up doing eventually - currently running modified OEM 986. I'm running their 986 racing shifter and pedals, great stuff!

I used Tom at https://www.cablecraft.com/cables/ many years ago for cables for my land cruiser BJ46 dif locks and PTO winch. They can make what every you want with what ever ends/lengths etc.

Coming out the old shift rod hole runs straight into the crank pulley. That's why we had to side step it.

V-8? If so, that explains it. With the 911 motor, it comes out really close to the right spot.

I looked at the old shift rod hole, but not exactly in front of the pulley, but my cables hook up on the PS.
I've already got the hole in the firewall established now.

If a person could put a flange like the old shift rod has made on the firewall, where that boot hooks on to, then I could maybe use a boot to go over it, and the cables, to try and seal things up?
Would attach to the flange on the firewall, but only problem, the hole would be a bit sloppy where the cables come out on the other end, I think. https://www.ebay.com/itm/112626703174?fits=...-0AAOSw-5dZ-yH-

With that flange ground off, and the nut off of there, what is the approximate diameter of the threads?

I don't know the actual diameter. But I do know it will go in the speedo cable and shift rod holes.

What trans and shifter do you have them on?

What is the quality like?

they are on a subaru trans, and a mr2 shifter. they are 7ft long, and i feel that they are good quality.
