Next to arrive is a Creality Raptor Pro 3d scanner. Between these two new tools, some super cool things will be showing up soon!

Cool buys! Looking forward to seeing where you go.

Can I ask why you chose the Raptor over the Metro X?

Awesome build, but being a Ferrari drive train, are you gonna need gold plated jack stands? poke.gif

He needs to put Boxster calipers on it, and put these on the calipers: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1451978890/6-x...ion0=3452963433

And I want to be around when the first pasta rocket owners see this car.

@jd74914 - I watched a number of video reviews and I got the impression either would be fine for my needs. No specific reason other than maybe a couple of the YouTubers I follow have the Raptor. (So apparently those sponsorships really do pay off!)

@ClayPerrine - The only "Ferrari" on it will be the intake. I know they're the same as the Boxster calipers but it seems too obvious (not the engine isn't!). They won't be red, either. If I do end up with Boxster calipers, they'll be dark (grey or black) and say "Brembo".
I'm looking at another brake option but it may be too big a stretch.
For now, all the focus needs to be on making it run. Then I'll worry about the other stuff.

Another thing that's sure to aggravate the Ferrari crowd is the license plate. I'll reveal that once it arrives.

It's comforting to know that even with new, fancy software (I'm using Fusion) and the 3D printer hardware, it still takes me multiple versions to get what I want. laugh.gif
Here's V4 of the my first 3D part: door bar trim rings for the LS car. Yes, this is the Ferrari build but they are both my builds so I'll post wherever I like. poke.gif

Big thanks to Andrew @TheRuttmeister for whipping up the initial design. You can see it - and download the files - here: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?sho...900&st=4580
Post # 4586

Anyway, I ended up starting from scratch and made two major updates:
1. a 10% size reduction that, on a part this small, makes a big difference
2. hidden fasteners on the outer side

Andrew used glass fiber PETG whereas I used PLA. I also ran at .1mm layer thickness and am REALLY impressed with the surface finish.

Given I've been at Fusion and this printer for essentially one day, I'm happy with how things are coming along.

Nice! Cool new toys, I’ll have to look into it someday.

I got a new computer to support all the 3D stuff I've started playing with and the one I got came with Copilot installed. So, I figured why not play around and see what's what.
Check out my LS build and you'll see what a few minutes of "paint my car" does. In this example, I gave it a pic of the engine bay and asked it to tidy up the plenum and paint things Ferrari Blu Tour De France (one of the colors I'm considering). I'm not sure if it's the trademark stuff but you can see it made some changes to the shape of the plenum, as well as the Ferrari script, and it tweaked a few other things, too.
But it really helps give a visual of what things might look like. Pretty cool, IMO.

That's a sexy combination, Chris!

This new (to me) tech is crazy! Here's my first 3d scan. I just grabbed my glasses case and gave it a go. Installed the software and followed the quick and easy setup guide, plugged in the hardware, and hit the 'new scan' button. Wave the scanner around until the preview indicates you have enough data (the preview pic turns this blue) and then process the scan into the mesh you see here.
I stopped with just this top view but I can scan the underside and stitch it together in the scanner software so it's a complete mesh of the object. Then into Fusion for conversion into a 3d model that I can mess with, etc.
Did I say this tech is crazy? aktion035.gif
I can't wait to see what parts I can come up with...

How does the 3D scan work with Fusion? We have been looking into getting a scanner here at work (and also use Fusion360) but have read some stuff on the interwebs about the mesh style model not playing nice with Fusion. Would be nice to hear some first hand experience.

I think that might be because Fusion is a solid modeler first and mesh tools were a later addition. If you try and work directly with the mesh there just are not the tools compared to the solid modeling workspace.

You can convert a mesh into a bRep (the native solid model) but that's a terrible idea and don't do that, a bRep with a million facets will crash most computers.

But there's lots of techniques to use the mesh as a reference and create all the important geometry in solids. There's a bunch of good videos on youtoob.
It's a steep learning curve, but much easier with examples.

Also a lot of people who are familiar with Blender will point out that its brilliant at working with meshes. They are not wrong, but Blender is not mechanical CAD and never will be.

Not trivial, but its easier if you already know Fusion well, than learning something like Rhino.
tygaboy
I've certainly got a way to go but I've seen a number of videos on the steps needed to convert scan data into what Fusion needs. There are a couple free products that simplify this (Mesh Mixer being one) and while I have yet to try, others are successfully doing it all the time. My famous last words for today are: "I have every confidence I'll be one of them."
Look for "Adventures in 3D" in upcoming episodes on my channel.

@ClayPerrine - I appreciate your concern but in that video, note that "Ferrari backed off". And have you seen the Alferrari build (Home Built by Jeff on Youtube) or the F40 build being done by StanceWorks? Or the rotary swapped 456 GT?
No telling how any future may unfold but at this point I believe they have way bigger fish to fry.
tygaboy
Version 1 scan of the battery box is complete. Those dots are markers that help the scanner measure the object. In all, it's not too hard to figure it out, especially considering how powerful the capabilities are, and Creality has done a good job of delivering a pretty user friendly hardware and software package.
Certainly a newbie but I'm making good progress up the learning curve.

That’s neat. How big of a part can you print and of what materials?

@Shivers - The printing envelope is essentially a 12" cube. It prints most every available filament which means stuff like TPU (think rubber for things like grommets) to carbon fiber reinforced nylon (structural stuff)and all sorts of other stuff like ABS.

It's absolutely crazy what's available to us amateur builders.

Major milestone (even if it's not much to look out):
The engine is back from Partick Ottis and fully serviced, including new cam belts, tensioners, pulleys and cam seals. Cam timing set, too. Patrick noticed some minor oxidation on the cam drive gears and he says, "I'm going to pull those off and bead blast them..." They now look new. aktion035.gif

And while I'm fairly sure I could have done all the service work, the peace of mind I get knowing "the experts" have given it a clean bill of health is well worth it. Interestingly, he mentioned everyone in the shop loved that it was going into a 914!

Anyway, now it's on me to wrap up the wiring and fuel system and it should be set to start.

Oh boy, I'm really gettin' down to it...

I have to say that engine is art.

Major milestone for sure! Looking great!!

I am surprised the engine has timing belts, would have thought chains. I must not have paid attention previously. It is art mosdef.

As for the scanner, from what little I’ve seen it is incredible the detail it can capture.

So cool. Sure beats files, a drill press and a block of aluminum.

The 3D scanner is here and being put to use. I have just started scratching the surface of learning this stuff but it's quite accessible and I feel good about how these new tools are going to work out.

Boy oh boy. I got a chance to see the Ferrari swap in person yesterday and I can not wait to see it all together and running. The engine, just back from a complete service is surprisingly small and looks amazing. But the engine bay is just beautiful and it is not even painted yet. That is going to be a show-winner for sure. Great work Chris. beerchug.gif
tygaboy
Learning new skills is great but it certainly slows down build progress. That said, it really opens up some cool possibilities.
Here's my first go at scanning the (hell hole) area I need to understand so I can fab a battery tray and support. Yes, I could do it manually but again, future me needs to be proficient with this tech in order to make all the cool components I have in mind.
tygaboy
Just playing with some initial ideas but you can see where this is going.

Chris did a great job on my muffler tailpipe. Now the proper "finisher" fits on and the Sport Dansk sounds just right in my opinion. beerchug.gif

For those worried about junk finding its way inside the suspension ear reinforcement, have no fear: I 3D printed a snap-in cover!

Obviously, I still have a lot to learn about 3D printing materials and settings. This is my first go with TPU (a soft-ish rubber-like material) and the errors you can see are adhesion issues I had issues with the support material that's needed when printing overhangs of any significance. That lower section tips away at a 20 degree angle.
But even this version is 100% functional if not up to my target quality standard.

I'm sure I'll get there soon.

That came out very nice! Can you put your initials on that part?
rick 918-S
Nice put a cat on there. You have some great toys! drooley.gif
tygaboy
1. Scan the intake area
2. Use the scan to reverse engineer the manifold surface and mounting hole locations
3. Model an intake block-off plate (with totally unnecessary extrusions that fit into the ports!)
4. 3D print and install

And no, none of this gets me any closer to making it run!
But it sure is cool tech and these are actually quite useful parts.
tygaboy
Figured I may as well do the same for the air/oil separator opening. Branded, too! happy11.gif
