Not meant to be a skid plate.
Simply designed to keep bottom of floor pan flat minimizing airflow disruption and to keep road debris off the steering rack and prevents debris from entering the area below the fuel tank through the large access hole. That is the "protective" element about it.
works as a skid plate when necessary...
this happened on ours (aluminum) when another driver pushed me off the track on a corner that had a very large drop off.

I've never seen a "plug" on that hole
in the picture you can see the welting that the factory used.
yes those are the gas lines... protected from the sharp edge of the hole by welting
you need the "skid plate" or "dust shield" or what ever you want to call it.
