Hi all,

Can anybody tell me what should be connected to this little pipe on my air filter box? It is a '74 1.8 with the L-Jetronic. It came without anything connected to it when I bought it.Click to view attachment

Thank you in advance!

These are better, thanks to our friend from downunder @wonkipop

or you can do @JeffBowlsby 's resto mod on the set up. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif aktion035.gif

frank - probably your whole charcoal cannister set up is missing?
what is the build date on the car?

it would be sucking air above the filter (and dirt/dust) through that port.
if the vapor emission equip is missing i would plug that port on the air cleaner if i was you.

Thank you all for the help, those drawings clarifies a lot. I still have the charcoal canister although I highly doubt it does any good after 50 years. But I will connect it as in the drawings.
I wonder what the reason is for this connection, it doesn't really make sense to me.

the connection to the air filter allows engine induction to pull fuel tank vapor emissions trapped by the activated charcoal in the canister to be drawn in for burning when the engine is running. the hose from the fan bleed port floods the charcoal with oxygen to release the hydrocarbons. its a good little system. has no effect on the performance of the engine whatsover. might even improve performance. biggrin.gif by about 0.0001 hp. smile.gif

out of interest @lolkema - does your car still have a white painted stamped number on the engine tin. it will be on the left hand side often, hidden from view by the heater fan blower hose. or it might be on the right hand side near the battery.

also an emission sticker. that will be on the left hand side of the engine bay on the body just above the black plastic fuse/relay board. the sticker is white with red writing.

if they are still there what do they say.

Boy! I just got a good reminder of how well the evap system on these cars works. Took the car for a drive earlier and refilled the gas tank. Then drove home and parked it in the garage. Wife comes home just a few minutes later in the DD and parks in the other bay. A half hour later and the garage WREAKED of gas fumes. So much so that I started checking both cars for fuel leaks. Finally found the culprit. I had removed the charcoal canister over the weekend to access the intermittent wiper relay. When I reinstalled, I forgot to reconnect the little hose from the charcoal canister to the evap tank. blink.gif What an unbelievable stench that belched out of there.

That's why I hooked it up even on the big 4.0L engine. It makes a substantial difference and it only adds maybe a pound to the total vehicle weight. I still need to do the factory six, but I have all the parts now.
