Thank you all for the help, those drawings clarifies a lot. I still have the charcoal canister although I highly doubt it does any good after 50 years. But I will connect it as in the drawings.
I wonder what the reason is for this connection, it doesn't really make sense to me.
the connection to the air filter allows engine induction to pull fuel tank vapor emissions trapped by the activated charcoal in the canister to be drawn in for burning when the engine is running. the hose from the fan bleed port floods the charcoal with oxygen to release the hydrocarbons. its a good little system. has no effect on the performance of the engine whatsover. might even improve performance.

@lolkema - does your car still have a white painted stamped number on the engine tin. it will be on the left hand side often, hidden from view by the heater fan blower hose. or it might be on the right hand side near the battery.
also an emission sticker. that will be on the left hand side of the engine bay on the body just above the black plastic fuse/relay board. the sticker is white with red writing.
if they are still there what do they say.
